Gail was a member of Future Teachers of America and the Lassos drill team at Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio before moving to Austin, Texas to attend the University of Texas. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma (professional society of women educators) and graduated in 1966 with a B.S. in Education. There was no doubt she was born to teach.
Gail started her career at Del Valle Elementary in 1966 then moved to Oak Hill Elementary in 1973 where she remained until retiring in 1996. She was recognized in 1985 as the Austin Independent School District Teacher of the Year and was a finalist for the National Teacher of the Year.
Gail loved the Lord above all else. She was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church with her husband, Doug, for over 30 years, followed by time at Mills River UMC and Lake Travis UMC. Just days before her passing, she sang some of her favorite hymns with her son and the staff of Arbor Terrace Assisted Living by her side.
Gail will be remembered for her warm heart and unwavering love for her family, little Sadie, and the community. Despite battling her own medical concerns for over 50 years, she never asked for special treatment or attention. Instead, she poured her love into educating generations of children and lifting up her community.
Gail is survived by her son, Ryan and his wife, Ampaporn; her sister, Kathy Whitney; and her brother, Paul Whitney.
Gail never wanted a service after she passed away; she just wanted her ashes to be scattered in the Blanco River with her husband, Doug Beckley. This will be done at a later date. Ryan would like to express his appreciation for the heartfelt care that was given to Gail by the staff at Arbor Terrace Assisted Living.
