and Velma Caroline Bussell. She was the 7th of 9 children who grew up on a large farm in rural East Texas about 100 miles from Dallas.
She passed away on September 14 in Austin, Texas.
After graduating from Quitman High School, Joy worked in Houston and Dallas before being selected as a flight attendant with Eastern Airlines in the early 60's. Her performance and personality got her hired to work the presidential campaign in 1964 for the Goldwater/Miller ticket.
In 1965 she met her husband Bob, who had just been transferred by his company, Procter & Gamble. It was love at first sight and they were married the following March. As a prelude of things to come, they were moved to Jacksonville Florida and San Francisco within the first 45 days of their marriage. The California assignment required Joy to give up her job, but Eastern Airlines rehired her to be a West Coast recruiter for flight attendants needed in the mid-West and East.
The 34 year career Bob had with Procter & Gamble took them to additional California locations. as well as Ohio, Hawaii, and Japan. Along the way, David Philip was born in San Francisco in 1967, and Robert Jr. was born in Los Angeles 2 years later.
Joy's sparkling personality and welcoming smile helped her make friends easily, and she created a loving home for Bob and the boys everywhere they lived. She was an active participant in Phil and Bobby's school and sports activities. In fact, she once became an assistant coach in a sport she knew little about just to keep the team from being discontinued. The boys also knew one thing for sure; that when they heard that loud, shrill whistle she used to call in the cows back in Yantis—they were expected to come home immediately.
Along the way, she developed a deep love for the game of tennis, and became an active volunteer as well as a player. In Cincinnati, she worked for years on a small professional event that has become one of the top events in the world. Her job as Player Communication Chairman started with her operating a phone at a card table in the open-air, to her final post in a large air-conditioned trailer with several telephone trunk lines linked into it. One year, the highlight for her was hosting Patti Connors who stayed in the trailer to escape the mid-West summer humidity while waiting for her husband to finish play.
In Hawaii she actively worked in the state tennis association as an official seeing duty as an umpire, Tournament Referee, and then her organizational skills allowed her to become a very good Tournament Director. She also welcomed into their Hawaii home the international college tennis players lured there by a scholarship from BYU-Hawaii. These young men became friends, and shared their country's cuisine with Joy and Bob on their overnight visits. One of these from China became the "informally adopted" son who went on to win the 1991 small college U.S. singles title, and now runs a tennis conglomerate`in his home country.
After retiring to Austin in 1996, Joy became active in The Hills Country Club affairs and held committee chair positions at both the World of Tennis and The Hills Club. Her ideas created interest and fun for members, and in 2005 became the first woman elected to Board Chairman.
In the community, she was one of the founding member of the Village Park; served as an Alderman, and was selected as Citizen of the Year in 2014 for her many contributions.
Joy was also known for her "Joy's List", an email bulletin that served the local area by helping people buy and sell items; get recommendations on various tradesmen; find lost pets or kids, etc. People knew if they got information to Joy on a subject of importance to them, it would soon be on the way to 2000+ email addresses at no cost to them. After 8+ years, her little community project had morphed into something that was taking up to 6 hours daily, and she decided to put it on Facebook to free up some personal time.
She will be fondly and lovingly remembered by dear family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother William Clarence; sisters Patricia Johnson, Thelma Jane Starrett, Lurene Winston, Imogene Heard-Allman and son David Philip.
She is survived by her spouse Bob and her son Robert Jr.; brothers Andrew A Bussell & wife Joyce of Yantis Texas; J.L. Bussell and wife Zona of Lovington New Mexico; Don J, Bussell of Greenville Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.
