BOSWORTH, Joyce Marlene (nee Craver) October 30, 1934 – March 15, 2020. Joyce Bosworth, 85, died on Sunday, March 15, 2020 in Austin, Texas. The funeral is on Friday, March 20, 2020 at St Theresa’s Catholic Church in Austin, TX. Interment will be at Fort Sam Houston National Military Cemetery in San Antonio, TX at a later date. Joyce was born on October 30, 1934, in Barnesboro, PA to parents Dean and Olive Craver. Big sister, Louise, was excited to get a new playmate. She spent her summers as a child chasing fireflies and eating corn on the cob fresh off the stalk. She was an accomplished flutist, including participating in a Julliard program when she was in high school. Her father was a 33rd degree Mason and her mother was an Eastern Star, so as a teen Joyce became active with Job’s Daughters and rose to the position of Honored Queen of her bethel. Later, as an adult, she became an active member of Eastern Star.
Upon graduating from Willis High School in Delaware, Ohio, at the age of 17, she ventured off to pursue her dream of traveling the world. Leaving Ohio, she went by herself and completed the stewardess training program of Eastern Airlines. However, at that time you had to be 21 to be flying as a stewardess within the United States, therefore when she was told that she could fly internationally for TACA airlines at her young age, she immediately interviewed with them and was hired on the spot. With only an overnight bag she flew to New Orleans and started her new job as stewardess that evening! Joyce traveled extensively through Central and South America where she immersed herself into the culture and language.
After meeting a jet fighter pilot on a blind date in New Orleans, LA, Joyce hung up her own wings to marry the love of her life, Alvin L Bosworth. They married on June 26, 1954 at St Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. After a year being stationed in California, they were transferred to Chambley AFB, Metz, France. During the three years there, their first two daughters, Deborah and Cindy, were born. Next, they were back in Louisiana at England AFB in Alexandria where their last two daughters, Teresa and Michele, were born. The next move was to Langley AFB, Hampton VA where Alan, their only son was born. The Pentagon, near Washington DC, was the subsequent assignment. They moved onto Fuchu AFB, Tokyo, Japan for two years and then in 1972 to Bergstrom AFB, where Al retired in 1976 and they made Austin their permanent home. For the last ten years, Joyce & Al have enjoyed residing at Longhorn Village Retirement Community.
As Joyce’s children grew older, she became the Owner/Broker of a Century 21 real estate agency. Throughout Joyce’s life she was active in service to others, including being a Red Cross volunteer, Garden Club president, Girl Scout & Boy Scout leader, Officers Wives Club, and leading Military Auxiliary Service Organizations. She also taught English to Japanese women. She was presented with special honors from the local Japanese community.
Joyce accomplished her dream of seeing the world. She was able to visit most of the countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. She also instilled the love of travel into all her children.
Joyce was pre-deceased by her parents, Dean and Olive Craver, and her sister Louise. She is survived by her husband, Alvin L Bosworth, her five children, fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her daughter, Deborah Ann Elizabeth Bosworth Campbell, her sons, Jessie Campbell and Dustin Campbell and great grandchildren Alex and Rowan Campbell. Daughter, Cindy Canaday and her spouse Mike, and children, Jen O’Neal (Barron), Leah Cook (Trey), and Bren Canaday. Daughter, Teresa Bosworth-Green, and children, David Green and Daniel Green. Daughter, Michele Bosworth-Hardy and her spouse Tom, and children, Tyler Hardy, Shelby Hardy and Trent Hardy. Son, Alan D Bosworth and his spouse, Jennifer, and children, Mollie Jane Williams (Anthony) and her newest great grandson, Austin Franklin Williams, and children Jacob Bosworth, Grace Bosworth, and Stella Bosworth.
