His working life began at an early age, ranching and farming to age 18 at the Jarvis Ranch in Driftwood, Tex. He graduated from St. Edwards High School in 1960, entered the University of Texas that fall, and, realizing he needed to "mature" some, postponed his education and enlisted in the United States Air Force in July 1961. He said that was one of the most rewarding decisions he ever made, having served 20 years, three months. His first four years were in the electronic security/intelligence field which included a three-year tour in Germany. Then he retrained into radio/television broadcasting which included tours in Thailand, England, Germany, the Azores and Alaska. He did it all, from disc jockey to chief announcer to network news and network program director to station manager/detachment commander of a combined radio/TV station.
When stationed stateside, he served in the lateral field of public affairs which included public and internal information, media relations, journalism and photography. In 1975 he was assigned "home" at Bergstrom AFB, Tex., first as the 12th Air Force Information Officer, then as the Bergstrom chief of media relations, a position he held until retirement on Oct. 1, 1981, shortly after attaining a degree in public information services earned through military and off duty courses over the years. He wore four rows of medals, awards and ribbons on his chest, and was proudest of his three Air Force commendation medals and Presidential Unit Citation with V Device (for valor -- Viet Nam era).
He entered the civilian workforce immediately: Two years in architectural hardware, a few months as a broadcast sales executive, and then eight years as government sales executive for 3M, which morphed into Harris/3M and finally Lanier Worldwide. He retired in 1992 and became active volunteering his time with the Hudson Bend Volunteer Fire Department, as it grew to become Lake Travis Fire Rescue, and the supportive Ladies Auxiliary – mainly performing Media Services duties as a photo journalist.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne Allen Jarvis; two daughters, Nita Jarvis and Tami Mallow; and two grandsons, Zachary Gonzalez and Justin Mallow.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Dee McDonald (1946); stepfather, Walter C. (Dub) Jarvis (1978); older brother, John Ronald (Ronny) Jarvis (1980); mother, Juanita L. Jarvis (1995); and younger sister, Susan F. Jarvis (2015).
Bob was an avid outdoorsman: boating, camping, fishing and hunting, harvesting only what he could eat.
It was Bob's wishes he not be mourned; instead rejoice with him in his love of life. If you have the time and feel he is worthy, he asks you pray that God will forgive his sins and accept him into Heaven.
A memorial service celebrating his love of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2016, at Weed-Corley-Fish Lake Travis.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lake Travis Community Library, 1938 Lohmans Crossing Rd., Austin, TX 78734 or Austin Humane Society, 124 W. Anderson Lane, Austin, TX 78752.
