Stan Culwell

Stanley Ray “Stan” Culwell, age 71, of Lakeway, Texas passed away at M. D. Anderson Hospital in Houston on November 22, 2010 after a long and courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family. Stan was born in Okra, Texas on April 30, 1939 to Thomas Ray and Ima Thames Culwell.

After high school he signed a professional baseball contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. He had a baseball scholarship with Odessa Jr. College before joining the United State Air Force. Stan played semi-pro ball while in the Air Force.

He served four years in the Air Force and while on active duty he married Mary Cox and to that marriage they had three sons.

Stan worked as a construction superintendent for Shell Oil Company retiring after 33 years of service. He and his family lived in many parts of the country. During his career with Shell Oil he had assignments in The Hague, the Persian Gulf, Cameroon, Africa and supervised the building of an ice road in Alaska. Following retirement he continued to do contract work for Shell for another 8 years. Stan enjoyed music, travel, sports and his family. He was a member of Friendswood United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Darla Sue.

Stan is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary of Lakeway; three sons, Stanley Allen Culwell of Galveston, Texas, Gregory Scott Culwell of Lake Charles, Louisiana and Jeffrey Paul Culwell of Dallas, Texas; three brothers, Larry Culwell and wife Cheryl of Dallas, Texas, Rodger Culwell and wife Barbara of Odessa, Texas and Jerry Culwell and wife Carolyn of Gallup, New Mexico; two grandchildren Kelbi Rae Culwell and Clare Scot Culwell both of Lubbock, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, November 27, 2010 in the Chapel of Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 411 RR 620 South, Lakeway, Texas with Rev. Gordon Bergstrom, officiating.
