Steve was born in Dallas, Texas on September 27, 1952, to parents Billie Luscombe Wilson and Carl Wilson. His early childhood was spent in Baton Rouge, cementing his lifelong love for Cajun cuisine and the LSU Tigers. The family then returned to the Dallas area. Some of Steve’s fondest memories were made while exploring his grandparents’ farm nearby in Melissa, Texas.
After attending JJ Pearce High School in Richardson, Steve served in the United States Coast Guard. He spent much of his time in the Coast Guard stationed in Hawaii, a place he loved and would revisit throughout his life.
In 1975, Steve married the love of his life, Mary Terranella, in Dallas. They would go on to build a beautiful life and family together in Austin. Their union was one rooted in love, friendship, and humor, and their recent 50th anniversary was a milestone of which Steve was supremely proud.
After Steve built a career in the printing industry in downtown Austin, he and Mary founded Bee Cave Printing in Westlake in 1983. The original shop was located in the building now occupied by Barton Springs Nursery on Bee Caves Road. In the days when printing was a service-based business, Steve was the go-to in his community, helping businesses, schools, teams, and non-profits with their printing needs for nearly 30 years. A generous and caring employer, he was also a vibrant presence and trusted source for his many loyal customers.
An avid golfer, Steve found great joy playing with Mary and a bevy of friends made on the golf course. His weekends were often spent chasing birdies, and his travels were often spent on some of the most beautiful courses in the US. In his later years, Steve hung up the clubs and became skilled in woodworking, humbly building small masterpieces for those around him.
Steve was a dedicated father, who could not hide his pride for his son Hank, and his daughter Kasie. His greatest joy came from his role as “DeuxDad” to his five grandchildren — each of whom firmly believe they were his favorite, because he regularly told each of them as much. He was a fixture in sports stands and recital audiences, cheering on their every pursuit. His grandchildren knew they had their biggest fan in their DeuxDaddy. They will fondly remember his steadfast encouragement, his legendary humor and his equally legendary dance moves.
Put simply, Steve was a character. Those in his circle knew they had a steady friend unlike any other. They could count on him for a listening ear, reliable support, some dangerous jokes, and a clever nickname issued in his deep Texas drawl.
Steve is survived by his wife Mary Wilson; his son Hank Wilson and daughter-in-law Sheridan; his daughter Kasie Boon and son-in-law Taylor; and his five grandchildren: Reagan Wilson, Brooks Wilson, Lily Kate Boon, Annie Boon, and Wilson Boon. He is also survived by his mother Billie Wilson; his brother Gary Wilson; his sister Sheryl Gomez and husband Pat; his brother-in-law Mark Terranella and wife Lucy Petrucelli; his brother-in-law Tony Terranella and wife Fran; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends he held dear.
Steve is preceded in death by his father Carl Wilson; his brother Richard Wilson; his in-laws Josephine and Tony Terranella; and his beloved aunts Gwen Patty and Tajuana Roberts.
A celebration of Steve’s life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Steve’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
