I shall never forget the greatest mathematics teacher at UMaine. He inspired confidence in his students by encouraging them and helping them believe in themselves.  His summer course in Operations Research changed my approach to learning .  He made this older student (me) believe I could learn even the most challenging components of the course. I returned to teaching with new enthusiasm and an effort to model his methods and his very kind manner as I continued my career as Mathematics department chair at the University of Central Arkansas.  To his family I send this late condolence as I just learned of his passing.  I am sure you are very proud of his contributions to education but prouder of his devotion to being the best human being he could be!

I'll forever remember Bal for his lovely disposition and kindness. He was my senior colleague at the University of Maine Mathematics department and we interacted quite well for about seven years until his retirement around 2003 or thereabouts. At the Math department, often he would step in to my office and have some chat. He and his wife invited us for dinner twice, once to their old house and another time to their newly built one in Veazie. Although I have not been in touch with Bal for many years, I still remember very well his friendly and disarming attitude that readily attracted people to him. A lovely personality, that I had the pleasure to be associated with for about seven to eight years at Maine. 

My daughter Kimberleigh went to many Kumon math classes with Bal. We both thought the world of him. We also remember his and Geeta's kindness when Maine had a bad ice storm. They opened their home to us. We both send condolences and love.

I have such clear memories of going to Bal and Geeta's house when i was a child in orono, maine. i remember visiting him in his office next to my dad's at the university. i remember him as spiritual, kindhearted, humble, and very much appreciated by his students as well as his friends.
