Memories of Margaret Ruth Olson from Auntie Joan, her father's sister. "I was only 12 when she was born, my first niece. There was a blackout at the time of her birth and, although it was not customary for fathers to be present at a birth, my brother had to hold a torch [flashlight] for the doctor who always remembered her for that reason. I saw her the day after - a beautiful baby with lots of dark brown hair. My parents and I visited often and every Sunday they visited us after church. It was a sad time for us when, at the age of nine, the family went to St Kitts and we did not see her again until she was 16. Over the years I looked forward to seeing her during her visits to England. Every memory of her is so precious. My sincere condolences to all her family."

My earliest memories of cousin Ruth are from late 1950s when she was training to be a nurse. She would visit our family (her Auntie Joan, Uncle John, Stephen and myself, Esther. We would also meet her to share a meal at our grandmother's home, ie Granny Hope. She stayed with us one Christmas and I loved the sewing box which she gave me. After she went to live in America, she sent me a turquoise, beaded, leather bag, made by Cherokee people.  Granny used to share the airmail letters she wrote from her new life in US.  In early 1960s she visited us in Bristol with Julie (aged 3?) and Philip a toddler. It was in 1980 that my husband, Dave, and I had a wonderful time for a couple of weeks with Ruth, Don and children, based in Lancaster. The last time we saw her was when she was in Exeter, UK, for her father's funeral. We send heartfelt condolences to all the family as you mourn the loss of our loved one.
