Wardell Lewis was born as a twin on April 2, 1931 in Branchville, Texas. He was the third of eleven children born to John L. and Lorine Lewis. He confessed his belief in Christ at an early age and was baptized in the Big Brazos River in Branchville, Texas 81 years ago. Wardell united with Shinning-Light Worship Center under the leadership of Rev. Ed Benson. He was a dedicated Senior Deacon and remained a faithful member until his health no longer allowed him to attend. Wardell was the best example of what we label as "A Servant of God" in all areas of life.
It was in Branchville, Texas that he met the love of his life, Winnie Foreman. They were united in holy matrimony on May 19, 1951. To this union, God blessed them with seven children (Danny, Phyllis, Wanda, Jennifer, Burl, Jason, and Dwight). In the year of 1957, the family moved to California where Wardell remained a faithful, loving husband for 66 years until the Lord called home his beloved, Winnie Lewis on September 23, 2010.
Wardell traveled extensively throughout the United States attending local, state and national conventions. He received countless outstanding awards for his great accomplishments throughout his lifetime. Wardell was a 33rd degree Mason; a member of Joseph A. Meekins Lodge No. 103 and Santa Monica Consistory No. 296. He has served the Order as Junior and Senior Steward, Junior Deacon and others. As an Activist, he was a member of the NAACP. On October 16, 1995, Wardell was privileged and honored to attend the Million Man March where he walked elbow to elbow with his brothers in Christ. Wardell owned and operated Lewis Janitor Service for 50 years. He served the Antelope Valley area, as well as, the state of California. His entrepreneurship took him to Korean where he installed and repaired blinds in Air Traffic Control Towers. To facilitate his work, Wardell invented a rack he used to clean blinds. This invention proved to be a tremendous success. He had an amazing personality and touched many lives during his 86 years on earth.
After a fruitful life, the Lord called Wardell home to rest on December 18, 2017, at 8:30 a.m. He was preceded in death by his parents (John L. and Johnnie Mae Robinson), wife (Winnie Lewis), sons (Burl and Danny Lewis Sr.), sister (Johnnie Mae Robinson), brothers (John L., Charles, and Tom Lewis, and one son-in-law, Benny Dilliard.
He leaves to cherish his memories his daughters, Phyllis Wiley (Reggie), Wanda Hawthorne (Randy), Jennifer Dilliard; sons, Jason Lewis (Louise), Dwight Lewis (Celeste) all of Lancaster, California; twenty grandchildren; thirty-seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, a special niece (Kolanda Johnson), nephews, cousins and many friends who will miss him dearly.
