Donnie "Don" G. Gower, 75, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada, surrounded by the love of his family and lifelong partner. Born on July 12, 1950, in Marion, Illinois, Don lived a life filled with warmth, humor, and generosity.
Known for his radiant positivity, gentle kindness, and quick wit, Don brought joy to every room he entered. He was a man of deep compassion, unwavering dedication, and great personal style, traits that left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
A proud veteran, Don served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War as a Morse Code Interceptor. He later became an active member of the American Legion for several years and worshipped with the community at Christ Church Episcopal.
Don’s passions were as vibrant as his personality. A lifelong antique collector with a discerning eye, he had a special love for vintage items, particularly Art Deco pieces. In the early 1980s, he and his beloved partner of 47 years, Lawson Skala, co-owned a vintage clothing and Art Deco shop in Chicago. Their unique and stylish venture was featured in Harriet Love's Guide to Vintage Chic, a testament to their creative spirit and shared vision.
Don was a connoisseur of life’s finer pleasures—never passing up a perfectly cooked steak from Ocean Prime in Las Vegas or a slice of authentic Chicago thin crust pizza. He had a lifelong affection for cats, having lovingly cared for several over nearly five decades.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Shirley Gower; his sister, Paula; and his nephew, Robbie.
He is survived by his devoted husband and partner, Lawson Skala; his daughter, Nikki (Darryn) Lemasters; granddaughter Jeana (Luis) Lemasters; great-granddaughter Kaily; and great-grandsons Luis, Zach, and Justin, the latter three being a set of energetic and adored triplets.
Don’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering authenticity. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by family, friends, and all who were fortunate to know him.
