Born on September 30, 1966, in Las Vegas to Joyce Newman-Chester and Willie Chester Jr., Dorothy —affectionately known to some as “Dot", was a proud native of the city she loved and served. She graduated from Valley High School in 1984, where her drive and determination first began to shine.
Shortly after graduation, Dorothy enlisted in the United States Air Force. She served with honor and distinction as an aircraft mechanic for eight years, rising to the rank of Sergeant. Her time in the military reflected her dedication, resilience, and commitment to excellence—qualities she carried with her throughout her life.
While living in Miami, Dorothy met the love of her life, Johnny Kendrick. The two later married in August 1992 in Las Vegas, Nevada. During their union, they were blessed with two children, Jonathan Akeem Kendrick and Markel Kendrick. Dorothy also lovingly embraced Johnny’s two children from a previous relationship, Johnny D. Kendrick and Monique S. Kendrick, raising all four with unwavering love and devotion.
“Coach K” dedicated 26 years to teaching Physical Education and coaching basketball in the Clark County School District. Over the years, she built lasting bonds with her players—many of whom came to see her not just as a coach, but as a second mother. Her passion for the game and her commitment to mentoring young athletes left a profound impact on countless lives. She concluded her coaching career at the Community College of Southern Nevada (CSN), where she continued to inspire and lead with the same heart and dedication that defined her legacy.
Dorothy was deeply loved by many and will be remembered for her unwavering strength, compassion, and vibrant spirit. Her passing has left a profound void in the hearts of all who knew her and in the community she so passionately served.
