He graduated from Excelsior High School, before marrying his earth angel, Eddi Hawkes. At the same time, the young couple began their family and Doug continued his college education in metallurgy. In 1962, they bought a home and moved to Buena Park.
The young couple began their life together in Bellflower where Doug attended Cerritos College and earned an Associates Degree in Welding Engineering. Doug worked for North American Aviation. He soon became the first electron welder on the Apollo Project. He moved on working for Fluor Constructors International for 30 years creating welding specifications and inspecting welds for numerous pipeline projects throughout the world. He retired as director of quality control and assurance.
While he was following his career and growing his family, he received an honorable discharge from the United States Army National Guard, Gun Battalion 251st Artillery. Doug served the community as a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Welding Society and National Old Trails Road Association (DAR). After retiring to Las Vegas, he and his wife became members of Lamb of God Church in 2008.
Doug enjoyed bowling, horseshoeing, billiards, target practice and even rode a bull. In the evening he relaxed around the table playing games with friends and family. When friends were near there was always a good joke to be told. He learned how to play the guitar and enjoyed having sing-alongs. He was a certified curio and relics collector, and a model train enthusiast.
Doug is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Gary Wheeler. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, his sons Daniel Hawkes and his wife Janice, Jim Hawkes and his wife Angela, daughters Jolene Hawkes and her husband Anthony Coker, and Dorri Hawkes.
