John loved family and friends more than anything. He was a man of faith who always put others first. He was often the life of the party and made everyone feel welcome and at ease.
John was born May 31, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York. A 1960 graduate of Levittown’s Division Avenue High School, he moved across the country to Las Vegas in 1964 with his wife, Teri, to work and start a new chapter in life at the family owned and operated Lucky Pierre’s, a convenience store and deli near the corner of Sahara Ave. and Maryland Pkwy. He subsequently worked in retail at Montgomery Ward before starting a nearly 40-year career in the food wholesale/distribution industry specializing in seafood sales and procurement for Lux Seafood, Desert Gold, CFS Continental, H&O Foods, US Foods, and Supreme Lobster where he finished his career and retired in 2014.
John enjoyed singing and was an active member of the local karaoke community, first at Bounty Hunter and most recently at Good Timez Billiards. He was a talented and enthusiastic dancer. He was an avid golfer and fan of the New York Mets, UNLV Runnin’ Rebels, Vegas Golden Knights and USC Trojans. And he enjoyed traveling with friends and family to big cities, national parks, and resort locales across the country.
John was a loyal friend to many, an admired father, a beloved grandpa, and a cherished brother, uncle, great uncle, and cousin among the many roles he fulfilled with distinction, joy and dedication during his life.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Anthony Gentleman; mother, Mary Agnes Gentleman; sisters, Jacqueline Mosca and Roseann Murphy; brother, James Gentleman; brothers-in-law, Ed Mosca and John Murphy; sister-in-law, Nina Gentleman; nephew Eddie Mosca; and former wife, Teri Gentleman.
He is survived by his son, Jim Gentleman (Jenny); daughter, Gina Gentleman; grandchildren, Jonah Gentleman and Ava Gentleman; brother, Gerard Gentleman (Fran); nephews, James Mosca, Brian Gentleman (Colleen), Michael Murphy, Kevin Murphy, Billy Murphy (Donna), Gerard Gentleman, Rich Gentleman (Mary), Ed Gentleman, and Rob Gentleman (Jennifer); nieces, Maureen Murphy and Liz Gentleman-Ryan (John); many great-nephews and nieces; great-grand nephews and nieces as well; and his favorite grand-dog, Elle.
While divorced from Teri, he remained close with her and the Tegano family including sisters-in-law, Lucy Lutz (Dick) and Rennie Coffield; and deceased brother-in-law, Frank Tegano (Barbara), along with many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and other members of the Tegano family who treated him as their own.
We’ll miss John’s laugh, his kindness and generosity, his many stories, and his deep love of family and friends. He lived life on his terms and did it his way. He left a legacy that we’ll cherish and hold on to as long as we live. We love you and will miss you always and forever. Life won’t be the same or as fun without you. May you rest in eternal peace.
