

John was baptized Catholic and lived a full and meaningful life, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. John’s journey in life was marked by his unwavering devotion to family. He is survived by his loving wife, Gwendolyn, whom he married 63 years ago in Chicago, Illinois. Together, they created a nurturing home and raised three wonderful children: Tamla, John Jr., and Michael, who were the most important part of his life.
A graduate of Oakland Elementary and Tilden Technical High School in Chicago, John later attended Malcolm X Community College. As an early trailblazer in computer programming, his 44-year career spanned various industries, including insurance, publishing, paints and coatings, retail, and manufacturing, showcasing his diverse talents and adaptability.
John spent 21 years of retirement in Las Vegas, Nevada enjoying the company of family and friends who had also retired to Las Vegas. Music played a significant role in John’s life, as he had an enduring passion especially for the sounds of the 1950s to 1980s. His impressive music collection of over 10,000 songs was a testament to his love for melody and rhythm, which he often shared with family and friends. He was also an avid sports enthusiast who enjoyed watching various sporting events.
John will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. A family historian with a memory like an elephant, John cherished the stories and traditions that bound his family together. He was a constant source of wisdom and guidance, always eager to share his knowledge and experiences with the younger generations. John’s great sense of humor was one of his defining characteristics. He was fondly known for his “Johnnie Jokes,” bringing laughter to those around him and creating a warm atmosphere wherever he went.
John prevailed over many health challenges and was affectionately known as the “Bionic Man.”
John, a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, departed on February 22, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was the middle of five siblings and was predeceased by his parents; sister, Allean Smith; and brother, George Roberts, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn; daughter, Tamla; sons, John Jr. (Regina) and Micheal (Sherryl); three grandchildren (Angelo, Carlos, and Danielle); and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his two sisters, Alma (Louis) Dodd and DeLois Mix; his brother, Andre (Deidre) Young; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins (Clinton, Haney, and Morrison Families), in-laws, and friends who will remember him lovingly for his warmth and humor. As we remember John’s remarkable life and the joy he brought to so many, let us carry forward his legacy of love, laughter, and music, ensuring that his spirit lives on in our hearts.
