February 27, 1929 – June 9, 2025 & September 10, 1931 – December 14, 2025
Johnnie Wesley Cuba passed away at his home in North Las Vegas, Nevada, on June 9, 2025 at the age of 96. Johnnie was a beloved husband, father, uncle, bonus grandparent, and friend, whose kindness, wisdom, dry humor and unwavering strength touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Born on February 27, 1929 to John and Rosie (Darilek) Cuba in Megargel, Texas, Johnnie was one of twelve children who grew up on the family farm, where hard work, honesty and integrity were characteristics instilled at a very young age. He married Johnnie Dell Dunagan on January 10, 1953. They started their life together in Archer City, Texas and were known by their friends as “He-Johnnie” and “She-Johnnie.”
At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife of 72 years, Johnnie Dell Cuba, and his only daughter, Kaye Cuba and her loving partner, Brian Towers, who was like a son to him, all of Las Vegas, Nevada. He is also survived by two sisters: Frances Quinlan (Pete), Georgia Hall, and one brother, Henry Cuba, and numerous nieces and nephews who loved their “Uncle Johnnie.”
Johnnie’s love extended beyond his immediate family, touching the lives of their dear friends and former neighbors who became family, Georgianna Greenway and Rodney (who preceded him in death) and their children, Brad Greenway and Kimberly Greenway Box (Brandon), who honored him with the name “Papa” and forever will carry his wisdom and kindness forward.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters - Lydia Cuba, Angeline Hajek, Rose Cuba and Mary Musil; and four brothers - O. J. Cuba, Joe Cuba, Stanley Cuba and Jim Cuba.
Johnnie graduated from Megargel High School in 1947 where he played football. Shortly after that he began a career as a businessman, managing Shamburger Lumber Company in Archer City, Texas for 24 years. In 1973, he was promoted and transferred to Waxahachie, TX to manage a larger store for Shamburger, National Building Center. In 1975, he returned “home” to Olney, Texas, to be near family and to continue his true passion of farming and raising cattle, forming the partnership, Averett & Cuba Lumber. While in Archer City, he was active in the community serving on the City Council and on the Volunteer Fire Department. In Olney, he was an active member of the Olney Lions Club, elected to serve on the Young County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) Committee first as a member, then Vice Chair and then Chairman, and served on the St. Theresa’s Catholic Church Parish Council for many years. He was also a First Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus. Johnnie loved to cook his entire life. He enjoyed having cookouts at the farm with his brothers and nephews, cooking for family reunions, and finally instructing his caregivers on how to cook his favorite meals.
In 2004, the Johnnies moved to Las Vegas, to be near Kaye and Brian. He loved going to the casino, and winning a few pennies “all in one lick.” Most people knew him to always have a cigar in his mouth, but he never lit it….just chewed on what he referred to as his “pacifier.” He missed Texas and his family tremendously, and always enjoyed when friends and relatives came to town. They always appreciated the efforts made to visit with them.
Sadly, his wife, Johnnie Dell, started to decline immediately after he went to his heavenly home, and she passed away on December 14, 2025. A joint graveside service to honor Johnnie and Johnnie Dell’s life will be held on April 18, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at the Megargel Cemetery Pavilion, followed by a Celebration of Life Dinner at Noon at The Royal Theater at 113 East Main Street, Archer City, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church (Memo – DTE Account), P.O. Box 42, Megargel, Texas, 76370 or the Megargel Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 42, Megargel, Texas, 76370.
The family would like to thank Dr. Nouhad Damaj, Dr. Thomas Lambert, special nurses and CNAs at Trellis Centennial Rehabilitation, Compassion Care Hospice and especially private “in-home” caregivers, Dorene Hogan, Irene Shiflet, Silvia Gonzalez, Lorena Santos, Rosa Serrano, and Glenda Sanchez for their loving and attentive care.
The Johnnies’ journey on this earth may have come to an end, but their spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved them most. May they find eternal peace and rest in their heavenly home.
Johnnie Dell Cuba passed away on December 14, 2025 at the age of 94 while on Hospice Care at EZ Years Retirement Living in Las Vegas, Nevada. Johnnie was a loving wife, mother, aunt, bonus grandparent, and friend, whose smile and laugh lit up a room. Her love and kindness were overwhelming, and she always prioritized everyone else’s needs over her own. She was admired by many for her intelligence, computer skills well into her 90s, love of God, and true Southern hospitality.
Born on September 10, 1931 to Roy and Ida (Smallwood) Dunagan in Olney, Texas, Johnnie was the youngest of six children who grew up on the family farm. Being 10 years younger than her next oldest sibling, instilled strength and toughness, which enhanced her beauty. She married Johnnie Wesley Cuba on January 10, 1953. They started their life together in Archer City, Texas and were known by their friends as “He-Johnnie” and “She-Johnnie.”
She is survived by her only daughter, Kaye Cuba and her loving partner, Brian Towers, who was like a son to her, of Las Vegas, Nevada. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Frances Quinlan (Pete), Georgia Hall, and one brother-in-law, Henry Cuba, and numerous nieces and nephews who loved their “Aunt John or Aunt Johnnie Dell.”
Johnnie’s love extended beyond her immediate family, touching the lives of their dear friends and former neighbors who became family, Georgianna Greenway and Rodney (who preceded her in death) and their children, Brad Greenway and Kimberly Greenway Box (Brandon). She loved them all so much and cherished every minute she was able to spend with them.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters – Nedra Triplett and Laneta Cole Gove (special brother-in-law – O’Dell Cole); and three brothers – Grady Dunagan, Laval Dunagan and Raymond Dunagan.
Johnnie Dell graduated from Olney High School in 1949, where she was crowned Football Sweetheart her senior year. She began a career in insurance, working in Olney for many years for the Olney Insurance Agency and Atchley Insurance Agency. She became well-versed in Medicare, while working for several physicians as Office Manager at the Olney Clinic for almost 20 years until her retirement in the late 90s. While in Archer City, she was active in the Women’s Auxiliary of the Volunteer Fire Department and was always supporting Kaye’s activities. She was also a member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church Altar Society for many years.
In 2004, the Johnnies moved to Las Vegas, to be near Kaye and Brian. She enjoyed visits to the casino and dinner outings with their friends. She missed Texas but loved being close to Kaye and their daily chats. She always enjoyed when relatives and friends came to town, appreciating the efforts made to visit them.
Sadly, Johnnie Dell, started to decline immediately after Johnnie went to his heavenly home in June 2025, and she passed away on December 14, 2025, notably her parent’s wedding anniversary. A joint graveside service to honor Johnnie Dell and Johnnie’s life will be held on April 18, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at the Megargel Cemetery Pavilion, followed by a Celebration of Life Dinner at Noon at The Royal Theater at 113 East Main Street, Archer City, Texas.
