Louise Hatcher Jordan was born to Levi Hatcher and Mary Cooper on August 9, 1939, in Trout, Louisiana. She was the 3rd child of fifteen children. Louise graduated from Good Pine High School before attending Natchez Jr. College in Natchez, Mississippi, where she was a Star member of the Women’s basketball team, received a basketball scholarship, and earned an associate degree. She met Albert (Butchy Boy) Jordan Jr., betting her roommate a quarter, that he would be her boyfriend. Louise won! Next, she attended Grambling State University and gained a bachelor’s degree in English. Later,
Louise attained a master’s degree at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Louise attended Mars Hill Baptist Church, where she confessed Christ at an early age. She enjoyed helping her mother take care of her younger siblings, and she looked up to her 2 Older siblings, Maxine, and Jase (JB). She took great pride in being from such a large, close-knit family. Later, she met and married the love of her life, Albert (Butchy Boy) Jordan Jr. They dated two years and were married at Mars Hill Baptist Church in Louise’s hometown in Jena, Louisiana. Louise and Albert were married 57 blissful years, until Albert was called home on June 17, 2016. Throughout life, Louise would say, “He never cheated on me, and I never cheated on him!” To this union, five children were born, Carrice Renee, Eric Rondell, Kenneth Ray, Stephanie Susan, and Aretha Collette. Louise enjoyed being a stay at home mother before working for the Clark County Child Protective Services as a social worker, and she steadily moved up to Supervisor. She also worked for the State of Nevada Department of Welfare. Ultimately, inspired by her love of children, Louise opened Little Angels Preschool Plus then later ran for Assembly, District 7, as a proud Democratic candidate and she also ran as a Clark County School Board Trustee.
In 1962, Albert and Louise moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, with their two children, Renee, and Eric. They were blessed with three more children, five to ten years later. The couple was instrumental in establishing Victory Missionary Baptist Church (V. M. B. C.), under the direction of Pastor A.J. Thompson, afterward under the direction of Pastor Robert E. Fowler, where Albert served faithfully as the Chairman of the Deacon Board for over 30 years, and Louise served as a faithful Deaconess. Early on, Louise was appointed by Pastor Thompson, to be the first historian of Victory Missionary Baptist Church, and she would recite the history on the church’s anniversary which continued for many years. Also, she loved singing praises in the Voices of Victory (VOV) Choir, where she called herself the perfect background singer. Eventually, she became the Choir President.
Additionally, Louise had strong convictions for her community and worked to make a difference. Louise was recognized along with her husband for their, “dedicated service and accomplishments towards furthering the cause of local blacks in their tireless efforts of excellence,” by former Mayor Jan Laverty Jones, who declared a Proclamation stating, “Albert and Louise Jordan Day,” on February 23, 1995. Furthermore, Louise and her sister, Mary Lee Walker, coached a Little League Boys Basketball Team at North Las Vegas Recreation Center with her daughter Aretha being the only girl on the team. They were undefeated! Aside from taking care of her community, Louise cherished her family and good friends. She loved cooking for them! So, they took great pleasure indulging in her delicious, homemade peach cobbler, her fabulous homemade biscuits, and her magnificent homemade sweet syrup! Aside from cooking, Louise appreciated Black history, and she treasured her family history, that in the long run, helped build her astounding self-confidence. Throughout her life, and more so, during her illness, she would often say, “I’m highly intelligent, and I have a master’s degree!”
At times, Louise could be challenging; yet, sensitive; other times, she could be bold; yet, quiet. Always fearing, always loving, and still respecting God. Proverbs 31:28 says, “Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.” Louise was affectionately loved, and she will be greatly missed!
