Maria Elvira Guevara age 88, peacefully passed away surrounded by loved ones, after a 15-year battle with Alzheimer’s at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada on
Sunday, February 27th. Born June 4, 1933, in Une, Colombia, the seventh of thirteen children to Isidro Guevara and Mariana Guevara Torres. She studied in Une, Colombia, and was offered a position in the mayor’s office as a secretary. After a few years she moved to Bogota, Colombia where she graduated from Academia Escolombias. After graduation she joined Colgas; a premier Gas Transportation Company in South America. She would go on to work in the United States for Bulova Watch Company and JP Morgan Chase. In 1963 she visited the United States where she met her future
husband, Enrique Sanabria. They married on April 3, 1965, and together made a home for their children in Bayside, New York. Here she began her next career as a
proud homemaker working part-time as a seamstress out of her basement.
Maria Elvira adored her family and friends and will forever be remembered hosting weekend card
games with them. She was an avid walker who spent much of her time in nature. She loved gardening,
sewing, traveling, music, reading, poetry, and the arts; sharing laughter over coffee with good friends
were some of her favorite times. She retired from JP Morgan Chase in 1996, later relocating to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2001, where she
spent the next six years traveling and enjoying her grandchildren.
Elvira was a quiet strength, stern but loving; a selfless, altruistic woman who never complained even
through the toughest times, always looking to a better future: ever calm and serene in her Catholic faith.
Her character and temperament were best represented from the time she was diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s in 2008 until her passing into heaven, always graceful until being called home by God.
Maria Elvira Guevara is survived by her children, Edward Sanabria and Claudia Guevara, her beloved
grandchildren Bianca Brown, Jacklyn Sanabria, Nicholas Ramsaran and Jordan Sanabria.
She is also survived by her sisters and brother, Julia Castro, Aurora Guevara, Alicia Guevara, Edilberto
Guevara, and Emma Guevara Montoya. She is lovingly remembered by her many nieces and nephews
whom she loved dearly, as well as her many, many treasured friends.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 12:30 pm on Friday, March 25th at Christ The King Catholic Church 4925 S Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89118
