Marian Detry Flowers (formally Johnson) was born May 14, 1946 to William and Joanna Johnson in Los Angeles, California. She was the youngest of 11 children. Marian graduated from Jefferson High School in 1964 the same year she gave birth to her first child and only daughter, Teri Slaughter; soon after she had three more children, all sons, Horace, Derrick and DeWayne Slaughter. Marian continued to work and raise her children in the Los Angeles area. In 1982 while working at a local Post Office she met a man that would become her second husband, James Flowers. Marian and James were married in a surprise wedding on December 22, 1984 by one of Marian’s best friends, Mae Ford. Through this union came a blended family of 6 children and many honorary children. Marian and James both continued to work for the Postal Service through the years, during which time James took his wife on many road trips through the south and all through California. In 2002 they retired and moved from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, Nevada to enjoy their retirement. In those years Marian also became lovingly known as “Granny” to her 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Waiting for her at Heavens door are her parents, William and Joanna Johnson, 7 brothers, Ren, Willie, Chester, Robert, Jack, Jimmie and Jesse Johnson; 3 sisters, Mary Neal, Cora Burrell and Lucielle Henderson; nephews, Michael Neal and Donald Sanford; son, Marc Flowers and one great grandson, Antiono Jackson. She leaves her legacy with her husband James; children, Terri, Horace, Derrick, DeWayne, Lolita and Christopher; her grandchildren, Jeanice Flowers, Melisha, Sharaya, Christopher and Sha’Trece Slaughter, Braylon and Jerrit Hunter; 9 great grandchildren, Tiana, DeCarlo, Du’Metrie, Precious, James, Nehemiah, Naomi, Kionna and Chris Jr.
