Pearl Ann Yazzie Mitchell passed away from cardiac arrest on May 13, 2013, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pearl was born on October 24, 1952, in Rehobeth, New Mexico to Fred and Winifred Yazzie. She was raised on the Navajo reservation in Arizona, where she was taught by missionaries and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when she was 15 years old. Because of this, she was disowned by her family and entered the Indian Placement Program. She lived with a family in Sacramento, California until she enrolled at Brigham Young University. There she met and fell in love with Stephen Mitchell, a very handsome young man from Beverly Hills. They were married on August 18, 1973, in the Oakland LDS Temple. Pearl graduated from BYU with a Bachelor’s degree and, later, a Master’s degree in Teaching and Education. She taught elementary school for 30+ years in St. George, Utah and Las Vegas, Nevada. Pearl is preceded in death by her husband, Steve. She is survived by her children, Rob, Stevie & Alison, Jeff & Dalia; and her grandchildren, Megan, Peyton, Beth, Easton, Michael, Tehya, Stevie, Brynlee, and James; her mother-in-law, Marilyn Brokaw; and her sister-in-law, Diane Hunt. A private memorial will held in Las Vegas. In lieu of flowers, please send stories or memories of Pearl to [email protected] so her kids and grandkids can have additional stories of her.
