Quilla Jarone "Jack" Batson passed away quietly on March 7, 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jarone was born on March 14, 1924 in Cypress, Florida to Lucinda Webb and Charley Batson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Farrell of 62 years on May 8, 2014 and his son, Drexel.
At age 16 he served as an enrollee in the Fish and Wildlife Department of the Civilian Conservation Corps before its abolishment in 1942.
In 1942 Jarone enlisted in the U.S. Army serving over 30 years before retiring as a Sergeant Major (E-9) on January 31, 1973. During his military service he was credited with having participated in the Rhineland, Central Europe, Ardennes and the Northern France campaigns of World War II. During his military service he was awarded the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with devices, the Army Commendation Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 bronze service stars, the Bronze Star medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal Silver Clamp with 4 loops.
After retirement from the Army Jarone joined the U.S. Postal Service where he initially served as a City Letter Carrier, however, within a year was promoted to the position of Personnel Officer covering the post offices in west Texas between Midland/Odessa and El Paso. He served in the position for 3 years before being promoted to the Director of Human Resources.
Jarone wrote his biography in 1973 documenting his life's achievements.
Jarone enjoyed playing golf but most of all enjoyed the company of his 3 grandchildren and 4 great grands. He and his wife never missed an important event involving them.
He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Diane Abernathy (Michael) of Las Vegas, NV and son, Roderick Selwyn Batson (Sheila) of Houston, TX. Granddaughter: Dana Wiley, Houston. Grandsons: Michael Abernathy II (Tammie) of Las Vegas and Roderick Batson, Jr (Christina) of Houston. Great grandchildren are Kalea Wiley and Trace Batson of Houston; Brooklyn and Kennedy Abernathy of Las Vegas, and last living sibling of 13 brothers and sisters, Jessie M. Wilson (Tommy) of Washington, DC.
Jarone was baptized into Christ in 1952 at the 9th Street Church of Christ in Fort Smith, AR. He was a faithful member of the North Las Vegas Church of Christ.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 18, 2018 from 4:00-7:00PM at Palm Northwest Mortuary, 6701 N Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, March 19, 2018 at 10:00AM at North Las Vegas Church of Christ, 2626 N Martin Luther King, North Las Vegas, NV followed by interment at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City, NV 89005
