Regina “Jeannie” Reuther (née Walder) joined her Heavenly Father on April 1, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. Jeannie exemplified the prophet Micah’s words: She acted justly, loved tenderly and walked humbly with God. Jeannie’s love for her family and faith exceeded any measure. Her unfailing kindness and laughter were the hallmarks of her beautiful soul.
The love of her large family in Buffalo, New York emotionally sustained Jeannie when she relocated to Las Vegas in the early 1960s. Jeannie’s strength and devotion to her daughters, who she raised as a single parent, were legendary. She worked long hours to send her children to Catholic schools from grade school on through law school. As much as she loved her daughters, however, Jeannie’s granddaughters brought her even more and immeasurable joy. She looked forward to conversations and Manhattans with her sisters and extended family each summer at Long Beach, Ontario, Canada. Jeannie loved to travel whether it was Ireland, Italy or anywhere Gonzaga was playing basketball. After retiring, Jeannie began a second career writing children’s stories.
In addition to Jeannie’s devotion to her family, she also generously gave to civic and charitable organizations in her community. In the 90s, Tom Miller of Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada recognized Jeannie’s many years of service to those of greatest need in our community with a piece of artwork that remained one of her favorites. Despite working full time and raising her daughters, Jeannie actively volunteered for a number of local organizations, including Catholic Daughters of the Americas, where she was instrumental in chartering the first Junior Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court in Nevada; Daughters of Erin; New Vista Ranch; Girl Scouts; PTA, as well as a number of her daughters’ activities over many years. No matter what it was, you could always count on Jeannie to get the job done.
Her parents, Francis & Eleanor Walder, as well as her brother, John Walder (Barbara) and Kathleen (late Harold) Reinhart, preceded her in death. Certainly, Jeannie is enjoying good craic in Heaven with dear friends and family.
Jeannie is survived by her beloved daughters: Michele, Tara (David Young), Renee, and her grand-daughters, Victoria and Margaret Young, as well as her dear older sisters and an extended family who meant the world to her. Mary Louise (late Laurence) D'Arcy, Rita (Jerry) Richter, Nancy (Russell) Caldwell, Patricia (late James) Carr, Chera Lachut, Nora (Kevin) Eberz, Therese (Robert) Perrino and James (Kathryn) Walder, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada. Jeannie’s life will be celebrated with a visitation from 3-7 p.m. on Friday, April 7th, with rosary at 6 p.m., at Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones, Las Vegas, as well as a funeral Mass on Saturday, April 8th at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church, 3050 Alta Drive, Las Vegas. A graveside service at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern, will immediately follow the Mass.
