July 3, 1941 - August 4, 2024
Richard R. Hughes passed away at home on Sunday, August 4, 2024, surrounded by family. He was born on July 3, 1941, to Ronald and Ruth Hughes in Murray, Utah. He was the first of four boys, with a total of 8 children in the family. His parents raised him well and taught him family values that carried through his entire life.
Richard’s dedication to serving the public is shown in his life and career. His commitment started with the United States Army where he served 6 years active and reserve duty. He moved to Las Vegas in 1965 and with his drafting, machinist, and engineering skills in place, he went to work at the Nevada Test Site for over 15 years and then on to the City of North Las Vegas as a senior plan’s examiner, retiring in 2008. A great many long-term friendships were developed throughout his career, especially with the city.
Richard was an avid bowler and golfer. He served as the president of the Southern Nevada Bowling Association (now known as the SNUSBC) from 1986 to 1992. He received numerous awards for his service to the association, excellence in performance, and dedication to the sport. He was inducted into the SNUSBC Hall of Fame in 2003 and into the Nevada State USBC Hall of Fame in 2011. He was a long-time member of the Craig Ranch Golf Association, donating his time as scheduler for the weekly games/tournaments. He made many lifelong friends doing what he loved, serving and helping others. He will be dearly missed.
Richard is survived by his wife, Joyce, son Scott E. Hughes, daughter-in-law Jacquie Thibault, grandchildren Scott E. Hughes Jr., Amber Hughes, Ashley Hughes, and Cody Thibault. There will be no services, however a celebration of life is being planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Special Olympics Nevada.
May you find comfort in the memories shared and strength in the love and support of those around you during this difficult time.
