 He carved his name deep in my heart and soul.I mourn him but also know he is with God and James.

 My heart goes out to Mary, you and the family during this difficult time. Anytime Roy's name was mentioned, it brought a smile ... it will continue to do so because so many of us held him in such high regard! He was one of the first friends I made when moving to Mt. Upton and his kind heart and huge smiles will always be one of my most cherished memories. Nothing meant more to Roy than his Mary, their children and of course their grand kids. He will be missed ... hugs and prayers for all of you.

I am so sorry to hear of Roy's passing. We lived next door to each other in Mt. Upton and always walked home from school together. We graduated together in 1965 so we were friends many years ago. We had just found each other on FB recently. My sincere sympathy to all of you who loved him.

I arrived at my first remote assignment as a newly-minted Staff Sergeant -- he quickly became a much-needed mentor.  His guidance, wisdom & most of all, friendship, are part of me forever. Mary & Steph, you are in my thoughts always.

How to sum up my good friend Roy. Some of you know him as Roy or Senior Master Sergeant Hartwell. Or maybe just Hartwell or Roy Boy.

To a couple of kids, he was daddy. He was a Papa friend n' Grandpa. To my good friend Mary, he was the love of my life, my soul mate, my best friend. To me, he was my good friend Roy. I'd like to share a side of him that maybe not all of you know, the romantic Roy.

Countless anniversaries, birthdays, Christmases, and just because days, he'd stop by the store I worked in. He'd sit down, take out a little box, and show me the jewelry he'd just bought. With a shy boy grin he'd ask; "Do you think my Mary will like it?" I'd just smile and say, you know she will. Just one of the many facets of Roy's personality.

So to get back to what's in a name. Three days before Roy went to the big cruise ship to heaven to join his son James, I was looking at a book of baby boy names when I came across "Hartwell" used as a first name. Who knew, and English, wow.

So I decided that if one of the greatest cities in the world could have the same name twice, New York, New York, then one of the greatest guys I knew could be called "Hartwell, Hartwell".

     That's "what's in a name".

Having met Roy when he worked with Mr. Franks, he used his humor to tease me endlessly. However, he was forever a support to the Franks' farm and to the MU community. His gentle soul was  what everyone in MU knew and spoke of. His reconnection with MU people through the years rekindled his spirit and past friendships with so many of us. While returning to upstate NY a couple years ago, he and I ventured to Finger Lakes wineries and local antique stores where he taught me more about dry red wines (from Colorado and California) compared to the Reislings of our region. He knew his wines better than many of my local friends! I learned so much that day, but most of all I will remember his kindness and his high regard for the Franks' and my own parents. RIP Roy, and am happy you can now be with your wonderful son in heaven. God Bless you Mary and Stephanie. He was one great gentleman and will be missed by so many who know and loved him as you did. Keep his memory close to your hearts, my friends.

My sincere condolences to Mary and family.  It was great to 'reunite' with Roy via FB, and argue over The Gamecocks vs Bulldogs!  His love for life was so evident, and I am sincerely sorry to learn he has passed!

My wife, Suzy, and I will always remember Roy for his kindness to us when we really needed a hand!  I worked with Roy for several years and could always depend on him to "have my back" no matter where we traveled or what we were doing.  His service to his country, to his friends, and his wonderful family make him more than just a fellow veteran to me -- he was a brother!

I knew Roy as "my second dad." I spent most of my teenage years at his house hanging out with his daughter Stephanie. I always loved to give him a hard time and he had a nickname for me...Willard. I haven't seen him in some time but I have lots of fond memories and he is apart of a lot of them. I will miss him but know that he is in good company with James. Rest in peace.
