

Rudolph William Brewington, affectionately known as “Rudy,” was born on November 2, 1946, in New York City (Harlem). This decorated veteran, public servant, award winning journalist and pioneering public affairs officer passed away on October 21, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Rudy, graduated from Cardinal Hayes High in 1964 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served two years in the Honor Guard at Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C before deploying to the Republic of South Vietnam from 1967 to 1968.
After his honorable discharge in 1968, Cdr. Brewington worked in a number of jobs. He worked as a news anchor, talk show host, producer, and correspondent with numerous stations including WUST, WOL, WRC, and WHMM-TV in Washington, D.C. He also cofounded Black Agenda Reports and held national platforms with America’s Black Forum and the Evening Exchange. He joined the Sheridan Broadcasting Network in 1981 as a news anchor and correspondent where he covered politics and ten NASA space shuttle missions.
Rudy, studied communications at the University of Maryland at College Park and transferred to Federal City College (University of the District of Columbia) and graduated with his M.A degree in adult education. Cdr. Brewington later studied business administration at Bowie State University and the College of Southern Nevada.
He was recalled to active duty in 1990 during the Persian Gulf War where he served at the Pentagon as a spokesman for the U.S. Navy. He also served as the assistant to the Navy’s Chief of information (CHINFO). In 1990 Rudy was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for an investigate series entitled “Domestic Surveillance: America’s Dirty Little Secret.”
Cdr. Rudolph William Brewington’s military awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign and Service Medals and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. He also received a National Emmy, the President Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, multiple CEBA Awards and the American Public Health Association’s Ray Bruner Fellowship. He was inducted in the Broadcaster Hall of Fame in 2007 alongside his twin brother, Ronald Henry Brewington.
Faith, played a central role in Cdr. Brewington’s life. He was an active and devoted member of St. James the Apostle Catholic Church where he proudly served as a member of the Knights of Peter Claver, exemplifying a deep commitment to service, community and spiritual life.
Rudy was preceded in death by his beloved mother Mosetta Smalls, his father William Henry Brewington, and siblings Paul Henry Brewington and Wilhelmina “Billie” Blandford. Left to celebrate his extraordinary legacy is his loving and devoted son, Carter Tucker Brewington, his twin brother and best friend Ronald Henry Brewington, his baby sister Vicki Brewington, and a host of nieces, nephews, family, neighbors and friends who were touched by his kindness and grace. Cdr. Rudolph William Brewington’s life was a testament to love in action, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who were privileged to know him.
A Memorial Service for Rudy will be held Saturday, November 15, 2025 at 1:00 PM at St James the Apostle Catholic Church, 1920 N Martin L King Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89106.
