Shirley was the oldest of eight children. Shirley grew up in California and graduated at 17 from Grant Union High School in Sacramento, CA. She immediately started working for the United States Government as a Civil Servant at McClellan AFB, CA where she subsequently met and married her Air Force Airman husband Jules T. Wilson, Sr. in 1956. They were married for 31 years and had four children: Julie, Jules Jr., Karen, and Pamela.
When the military moved the family to Cheyenne, WY in 1970, she worked for the US Postal Service. Once Jules Sr. retired from the military and her last child was out of the house, and more importantly wanting to escape the cold weather, she transferred to Rohnert Park, CA to Supervise the Post Office Mail Processing Unit there. Shirley retired in 1990 from the Post Office, after more than 30 years with the federal government. Shirley then moved to Las Vegas in 1995 to be near her sister Betty; she worked at the Star Trek Experience at the Hilton Hotel for ten years. She also worked at the Howard Johnson Hotel and then retired one last time as a Customer Service Representative at Aliante Hotel and Casino at the age of 80.
Shirley was a very kind and loving person; she never met anyone that she didn’t like or talk to, and she would give you the “shirt off her back” or her last dollar to help you. She was hard working and instilled that work ethic in her children. Shirley also liked to have fun; she loved watching sports, traveling, bowling, spending time with her life-long friends and hitting the Casino from time to time.
Shirley will be missed more than words can express and her memory will forever be cherished: by her children; Julie Pellum and Jules Wilson, Jr.(Cassandra) of Las Vegas, NV, Karen Robinson (Michael) of Libertyville, IL and Pamela Matthews (Charles) of San Antonio, TX. Four grandchildren; Jules Wilson III, Jordan Pellum, and Kuzari Burrell of Las Vegas, NV and Cortney Matthews of Austin, TX; sisters; Vivian Pittman of Spokane, WA, Bernice Smith of Sacramento, CA, Pricilla Williams (Ocie) of Castro, CA; brothers; John Smith of Sacramento, CA and James Smith (Sandra) of Spokane, WA…and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends
A celebration of life for Shirley will be held Friday, February 3, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Palm Northwest Mortuary, 6701 North Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89131, followed by a reception from 4:59 PM to 6:00 PM.
