A bright, shining light has left this earth. No, that's not quite right. She has joined the millions of stars that twinkle above us. Her light will never truly be gone. Silvia  was a second mother to me. My own mother had to work outside the home, so Silvia rose to the challenge of caring for myself &  several of the neighborhood children after school. She tended to our scraped knees and had hot chocolate at the ready once we'd tired of our snowball fights. She'd prepare  canned spaghetti-O's and ravioli, even though she hated the smell of them. She did it because she loved us. For
several years she was a dedicated volunteer for The Head Start Program, caring for young children.
An accomplished seamstress, she  created gorgeous clothes for her girls and even some for me. She excelled at cake decorating, as well . Her daughters and I had several shared birthday parties and her cakes were always masterpieces. She raised her girls with a firm but also gentle hand. She was the first friend my mother made when my family moved from Queens to Long Island. And they remained the best of friends until my mother passed away. I eventually grew up and moved away but I never forgot her. I'd always see her when I came back to the Island on my once a year trips. Her kindness was especially felt when, during the time I was up there for my mother's funeral, Silvia noticed that my husband and I hadn't been eating for the better part of two days. She walked us across the street to her house, sat us down and made 2 of the best damned cheese omelettes we've ever had. I'd like to think that the love that went into them was what made them so delicious . Silvia battled a form of lung cancer for almost 7 years and it ravaged her body. Part of me is relieved that she is no longer in pain. But the other, bigger part of me, is truly heartbroken. Heartbroken for myself and for her family. She was feisty, mixed with motherly and  with a side of funny as hell. I will miss her forever.

Dear Sis,
I want to Thank you for saving my life as a child growing up without our mom. You & Johnny took me under you Wings & taught me how to become a Strong Vibrant Woman dealing with Life's Trials & Tribulations at an early age growing up as a young adult all the way to becoming a Great mom to my children. You have always been there for me & my family when we were in need & never expected anything in return. The Love I hold for you in my Heart is so Great as I have always considered you to be my 2nd mom & you considered me to be your first child. I miss you so much not hearing your voice every day as I promised you I would call your every day until God calls you. My Promise has been fulfilled but know how much theses calls are missed. I Love you my dear sister, May God keep you under his Wings until you get your Angel Wings, always be with me in Spirit until we meet again & continue to Rest In Eternal Peace!!!

Dear Mom,
I love you so much and I miss you.  I just want you to know that you are "The Wind Beneath My Wings". It has been two weeks since you have passed and I keep thinking I need to hurry up to get over to the house and ptake care of you. It has been an honor that you let Bryan and I take care of you, and you trusted us with your life. Rest In Peace my Angel.  Love you forever

There are no words to describe the  magnitude of the loss facing our families.  As was her true nature, Silvia valiantly fought the fight. Having succeeded our eldest sister and family matriarch Josie, Silvia stepped up to the plate and led Carmen, Aurea and me throughout the subsequent 28 years she held this critical place in the family.
