Stephen Fred Turner passed away peacefully at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 17, 2025. Steve, as he was known to his friends and family, was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 16, 1936 to Fred and Sophie Turner. He and his two siblings grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. Upon graduation from high school, Steve was accepted into the prestigious Colorada School of Mines. While still in school, Steve married his high school sweetheart, Carol, and became the father of a baby girl. Upon graduation in 1958 with his degree in Mining Engineering, Steve worked in coal mines around the southwest. During this time two sons were added to his little family. His young family followed him around the southwest until finally settling in Las Vegas in 1962. Steve worked at the Nevada Test Site until 1969 when he and his two partners opened the civil engineering firm of Baughman, Haught and Turner. Steve added to his Professional Mining Engineering accomplishment by also becoming a Licensed Professional Land Surveyor. Steve’s professional stamp can be found on thousands of documents relating to the growth of Las Vegas. Steve was also a long-time member of the Las Vegas Rotary Club where he participated in many philanthropic activities. Although Steve retired in 2006, his successful little business has continued to this day and is one of the oldest continuous firms in southern Nevada. Among Steve’s many accomplishments, he became a licensed pilot. He flew his planes not only for business and pleasure but also for humanitarian reasons carrying doctors to other counties. Steve loved to hunt and fish. He traveled around the US, Canada and South America in his pursuit of his passion. His favorite trip being the yearly trip to Yakutat, Alaska for salmon fishing with friends and family. Steve also enjoyed rock hunting. He spent hours searching the surrounding hillsides and valleys for gold nuggets and meteorites. Fondly, Steve was seldom found without his favorite drink in hand, a Manhattan. Our family will miss the annual Christmas Eve gatherings that dad/grandpa hosted every year. Steve leaves behind his brother, Gary (Karen), sister, Linda (Brian), his children, Pamela (Paul) and David (Laura), eight grandchildren, ten great-grand children and his companion, Rosa. He is proceeded in death by his parents and youngest son, Richard. A Celebration of Life is pending.
