

Born on July 22, 1924, in Alva, Oklahoma, V.O. began his military service in 1942. As a career Naval Officer, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. His service included deployments on the USS Bon Homme Richard, USS Badoeng Strait, and other Aircraft Carriers. He was stationed both at home and abroad, including deployments in Hawaii, Japan, Midway Island, Alaska, Puerto Rico, Curaçao, Guam, and Iceland. V.O. was commissioned as an officer in 1958 and retired as a Lt. Commander in 1969. His bravery, dedication, and sense of duty exemplified the spirit of his generation.
During his early years, V.O. met and married the lovely Catheryn Jo Hill on December 20, 1942. They shared a wonderful life together for 64 years and raised one daughter, Linda Ann.
After retiring from the Navy, V.O. began a civilian career with 3M Corporation. He was an active and dedicated member of several Masonic organizations, including The Shriners, Eastern Star, Scottish Rite, and multiple local and state lodges in the communities where he lived throughout his life. Most importantly, he cherished spending time with his four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He and Kay were wonderful grandparents who taught their grandchildren the importance of family, loyalty, and responsibility. Everyone benefited from the time they spent with their grandparents.
Known for his loyalty and responsibility, V.O. was an example to all who knew him. His family cherished his generosity and love. His life exemplified the importance of service, perseverance and hope.
He is survived by his daughter, Linda Ann Smith of Las Vegas, Nevada; his grandson Stephen Smith and wife Carol of Austin, Texas; and his grandson Timothy Smith and wife Stephanie of Anna, Texas.
He is also survived by his great-grandchildren: Matthew Smith and wife Ashley of Newbury Park, California; Emily Bywaters and husband Jake of San Antonio, Texas; Kaitlyn Smith of Houston, Texas; Alison Lane of Smithtown, New York; and Joshua Smith and Lauren Smith of Anna, Texas.
V.O. was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Edith Campbell; his beloved wife, Katherine; his son-in-law, Gary Smith; and his grandchildren, Gary V. Smith and Deborah Smith.
A private family burial service will be held at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada, with military honors rendered in recognition of V.O.’s service for his country. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to the charity of your choice in memory of V.O.
His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him—and those who learn of the sacrifices he made for something greater than himself. He will be missed by all who loved him.
A funeral service for V. O. will be held Friday, July 25, 2025 from 9:20 AM to 10:00 AM at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Mem, Boulder City, NV 89005.
