Vernon Venett Thomas "Ron" was born on July 24, 1964, in Las Vegas, Nevada to Mary Thomas and Charlie Gill (who preceded him in death.) He was born just 5 minutes after his twin sister LaVonne Lynette. Vernon accepted Christ at the age of eight and was baptized at the Second Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. V.C.L. Coleman. Through his travels, he always found a church home and was currently a member of the Victory Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Robert E. Fowler, Sr. Vernon graduated from Clark High School in 1982 and without hesitation at the age of 17, he made a decision to serve his country and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During his time in the Navy, he serviced the Persian Gulf War and the war in Somalia and was awarded many decorations and medals. After 21 years of serving his country, Vernon retired from the U.S. Navy in 2003. Upon retirement from the Navy, Vernon moved back to Las Vegas and began employment with Wackenhut Services, Inc. at the Nevada Test Site where he worked eight years. Vernon loved to dance, laugh and travel; however, his greatest passion was his love for the Lord and his family. He made sure to always support anything his family was involved in. If he could be there, he was there, near or far. If he could help in any way, he would help. He was a great role model and encouraged many of the younger family members. He enjoyed rewarding them with outings and sleepovers. His concern and love for ALL his family and friends was genuine. Vernon leaves to cherish his memories: his mother Mary Thomas-Branch, stepson, Terance McCray (Rojelita), step daughter Alonzia Dominique McClain and five grandchildren. Three brothers, Christopher Jackson, Curtis Ward and Maurice Gill, seven sisters, Janice Mays, Sharon Watson (Roy), LaVonne Thomas, Sheila Thomas (Loren), Betty Faye Webb and Joyce Gill all of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jacqueline Allen (Frank), of Riverdale, Georgia and Debra Tongambou (Ferdinand) of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Two aunts, Marrie Pullens and Lucy Rogers, one uncle Isaiah Thomas, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and great friends.
