Willie Lee Virgil was born in Newton, Mississippi on December 23, 1943, to the parents of Willie and Bessie Virgil. Large families were not uncommon and in fact it was an accomplishment to be surrounded by so many loving individuals as they helped create the family legacy. Willie was one of seven children, and his siblings were: Albert, Laquita, Sharron, Scotty, Charles and Edward. Willie’s early childhood years were spent in Mississippi where he graduated from Jefferson High School.
Willie was a very loyal worker. He started his work career at Reynolds Electrical & Engineering Company as a custodian. Although he loved his position, Willie sought interest in another area of the workforce and that’s when he transferred into the field of Radiation Safety. He became a Radiation Safety Technician for many years. He also spent some time as a supervisor in that field and won numerous awards while working underground events and supporting user groups for 48 years. He retired in 2011 from a career he loved. Willie went on to have a large family of his own. To his first union with Ruth Virgil- Cooper (Peaches) was born their two daughters Rosyln & Deanna and stepsons Wayne, Calvin, Benjamin & Clyde. His second union to Vernell Virgil- White brought two daughters Angela, Tina and stepson Corey. Later in life, Willie met and married Virginia Virgil and with this union came his stepson, Micheal.
Religion was always the backbone of the Virgil family. Willie attended From the Heart Church Ministries under Episcopal Pastor John Cherry. Sr. until his passing. He continued under Bishop John Cherry II until Pastor Darryl Mcduel split from the parent church and Grace Church began. While in ministry, Willie worked the sound board, completed bank deposits for the church and various other duties as needed by Pastor McDuel. Willie was a faithful servant to any ministry he touched. He eventually became a member of the Board of Trustees for the church.
Willie enjoyed watching sports especially football and basketball. He only watched golf if Tiger Woods was playing. Willie enjoyed fishing and especially loved being around his children and grandchildren during family gatherings. Seeing his legacy truly warmed his heart. He enjoyed talking about politics, especially if you were the adversary. Willie liked to spend time with his siblings in Mississippi and California. He enjoyed vacationing with his family. Willie’s favorite pastimes were listening to music: Blues, Soul, R&B, spiritual and so much more.
Willie was preceded in death by his parents (Willie and Bessie Virgil), one brother (Edwards Virgil), and 3 children (Angela Virgil - Burns, Tina Reynolds and Clyde Fletcher).
