He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam era and his rank was SP-E4, and served in the United States Army Reserves as well. He received an Honorable Discharge.
Wilmond was a member of the Grocery Clerks and worked at Safeway Stores. He worked for the United States Post Office as a Letter Carrier and, for a short time, he was a Reserve Police Officer for the Martinez Police Department. From 1973 to 1977 he was an inventory worker on cargo ships. He joined the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department on November 23, 1977 and worked at San Bruno County Jail #3, the Work Furlough Facility on Bryant Street, and finally at County Jail #2 (now CJ#4) at 850 Bryant Street. He was the Processing Deputy there until he retired on December 7, 1996.
Wilmond retired earlier than intended because his mother became ill and it was his mission to go back to Georgia to take care of her.
His favorite past time was bowling; he bowled in several leagues with many of his co-workers. In later years he enjoyed fishing (except for baiting the hook with live worms or anything else that crawled).
His favorite professional sports teams were the Oakland A’s, Oakland Raiders, the Golden State Warriors and the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
Wilmond was preceded in death by his father - DeWitt King, Sr., mother - Lillie M. King, former wife - Dorothy M. King, and sister - Mary C. Montgomery (Joe).
On August 6, 1999, Wilmond married Valerie P. Greenly. When Valerie retired from the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department in 2003, they relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada. He leaves her to mourn his passing. It was Valerie’s honor to be a caregiver for her husband throughout his illness. He is also survived by his two sons - Amefika L. King and Sanyika T. King; his brother - DeWitt King Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia; sisters-in-law - Carolyn Jill of Omaha, Nebraska; Victoria Greenly of San Francisco, California; Annie Abram of Daly City, California; 9 nieces, 4 nephews, a special cousin - Robert King (Veronica) and a host of other relatives and friends.
