He was born in New York, NY to Gitano (Tommy) and Silvia Milano. He was the eldest of five siblings
And shortly after the birth of his youngest sister Louise, the family relocated across the East River into Queens into a “bigger” home. There he attended Monsignor McClancy High School where he graduated Valedictorian.
When he was growing up, Charlie could be found reading James Joyce, collecting stamps, practicing his Latin and French or doing chores around his father’s bar, Milano’s, on East Houston Street in Little Italy. He went on to graduate from Columbia University with a degree in molecular biology and Mt Sinai Medical School, both in Manhattan, where he obtained his doctorate in OB/GYN and received the Dr. Alan F Guttmacher Award for Excellence in OB/GYN. His post-graduate training included both Resident, Chief Resident and Clinical Instructor of OB/GYN at Mt Sinai Hospital and a Clinical Assistant of OB/GYN position at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, NY. He participated in several Grand Rounds as a presenter as well as a conference lecturer.
During this time, he married his high school sweetheart, Christina and they had two beautiful daughters, Rosanne and Teresa who both inherited his academic prowess and both went on to become successful attorneys.
Charlie was board certified with the American Board of OBS/GYN, Legal Medicine and Disability Analysts as well as the National Board of Medical Examiners. He was associated with over two dozen selected societies and affiliations and served on numerous committees. His post-graduate academic work included research in genetics and several publications related to both obstetrics and gynecology.
After receiving an attractive offer from an upstate OB/GYN group in Poughkeepsie (Riverside Women’s Health) where he worked side-by-side with his dedicated and loyal nurse, Janice (LaBodin) Holden (who kept him in line and on time), he moved his family there to continue practicing as an Attending Physician at both Vassar Brother’s Hospital (now known as Nuance Health Vassar Bros Medical Center) as well as St. Francis Hospital (now Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital of Westchester Medical Center). Additionally he served as Director of the Dept of Gynecology at St Francis as well as the Vice President of Medical Affairs. Never straying far from his need to keep his brain busy, he somehow found time to obtain a Juris Doctorate in Legal Medicine from the Thomas Jefferson College of Law and establish his own OG/GYN consulting business.
After leaving the formal practice of medicine, Charlie retired to Myrtle Beach with his current wife, Susan to avoid the harsh New York winters where they made their new home with their beloved fur babies Espresso and Sambucca. The Charlie discovered a passion for exotic fish and began his in home saltwater fish tank. Although enjoying his retirement, Charlie couldn’t help but to have some kind of medicine still in his life so he joined JCAHO ( The Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospital Organizations) as a part-time consultant and later with Courtemanche and Associates out of Charlotte, NC. These positions still enabled him to travel all over, even as far as Tawain where he made several trips.
Charlie was an avid lover of football and baseball and was never far from a TV watching his beloved New York Yankees or on Sunday’s routing for his NY Giants. His occupation provided him with considerable time off which allowed him to travel through the states to games with his girls whom he shared his love of football with. He is remembered as a father figure by his younger siblings and a bit of a trouble maker by his childhood friends. His intelligence, dry wit and generosity will be remembered by his family as well as his dedication to medicine. He will also be remembered by his many patients and countless other with whom he interacted with over the years.
Charlie is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Susan; his children Rosanne and Teresa and their Mother, Christina; his siblings, Anne, Rosemary, Dominick and Louise along with several nieces and nephews.
Charlie did not wish for any services following his death. Those wishing to honor his memory are encouraged to donate to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, one of many charities he supported as a way to support cancer research and continue his lifelong commitment to medicine.
