Diane was born on December 23, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York, to Valentine and Lorraine Koehler. She grew up in Brooklyn and attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School. Throughout her life, she cherished the gift of lifelong friendships, many of which spanned decades and became like family.
Diane later moved to Staten Island, where she raised her children and earned her degree from The College of Staten Island. She worked for the New York City Police Department as a Senior Staff Analyst for 27 years before retiring in 2009.
After almost 50 wonderful years together with Michael Flaherty, they built a life filled with love and laughter living in Staten Island, NY, Howell, NJ, and Little River, SC. Diane and Michael enjoyed traveling with friends and family, big holiday gatherings, and most importantly, spoiling their 13 grandchildren. She was a beloved grandmother of Nicholas, Connor, Thomas III, Valerie, Chase, Christopher, Colin, Dillon, Kara, Emma, Jack, Sadie, and Ryan.
Diane is survived by her husband, Michael; her children, Jennifer and Joseph Muscarello, Thomas Jr. and Jill Singer, Michael and Christine Singer, Dawn and Keith Singer, Michael and Amy Flaherty, and Jessica and MJ Taha; as well as her grandchildren and brothers, Richard and Judy Koehler and Christopher and Edy Koehler. She will also be dearly missed by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Diane had a passion for trips to the casinos in Atlantic City, going to Broadway plays in Manhattan, and fun get-togethers with neighborhood friends in Howell, NJ, especially playing mahjong. In South Carolina, she loved shopping at Chico’s, participating in her Secret Sista group, and enjoying new restaurants. She will be remembered for her giving spirit, kindness, and deep loyalty to her family and friends.
A memorial mass will be held on Diane’s birthday, December 23, 2025, at 10 o’clock in the morning at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, 727 NJ-36, Union Beach, NJ 07735.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization in Diane’s memory.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to all who have shown support and kindness during this time.
