Emma Jane Honsaker was born on March 19, 1927 in a farmhouse in Woodside, Pennsylvania. Named for her paternal grandmother Emma Etta Honsaker, and her Aunt Janie Springer, she was always known as Jane. She was the baby of the family.
Jane didn’t have children, but she had seven nieces and nephews. She was the fun aunt, always up for a good time and cutting up. She played cards with the little ones when she was a teenager, rode the ferris wheel, cheated at croquet, played an unforgiving game of dominos, and made crank phone calls with the kids. She had a convertible Corvair that she liked to drive up the mountain with the top down, wearing long wild scarves. She was an understanding listener to teenagers, and made the kids feel special with thoughtful and generous gifts. The nieces and nephews especially remember a fur collar for a winter coat, a Chet Atkins album, and cast-off evening dresses for playing dress-up. They all looked forward to her visits.
Jane was outspoken, stubborn and feisty. She spoke her mind. As a 20-year-old, she and two girlfriends drove from Uniontown, Pennsylvania to southern California. They worked as secretaries there for a couple years before coming home. She often talked about that time as a happy-go-lucky chapter in her life. It was a great adventure for young girls in 1950.
Jane and Charles Grimm married in 1972. They lived up in the mountain outside of Uniontown in a house that Charles had built. Their dog Mitzie was a spoiled and loved pet. Jane was involved with the garden club and the Great Meadows chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She worked at various establishments as a secretary. The Grimms retired in 1985 and moved to the lovely home they had built in Calabash, North Carolina. They enjoyed their relaxed life there, near Jane’s sister Dorothy and her husband Bob. The four of them took two trips to Europe together, which they enjoyed very much.
After Charles passed away in 2009, Jane undertook the monumental task of downsizing and selling their home. She moved to Golf Colony in North Myrtle Beach where she lived for two years before moving to assisted living at Summit Place in Little River. She made many good friends while living there and enjoyed the activities and outings she got to participate in there.
We will miss our Aunt Jane; she was one-of-a-kind, and the last of her generation.
