
Glyde Edins (Monk) Hawkins, Jr., 89, died Thursday, August 3, 2017 at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina.
Born in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Glyde E. Hawkins, Sr. and Margaret Ruby Hitt Hawkins. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948, receiving the World War II Victory Medal, and graduated from Rappahanock Polytechnic Institute in Richmond, VA in 1954. He worked as a public works engineer for Arlington County (VA) for 30 years, was a founding member of the Arlington County Employees Credit Union, and served on its Board of Directors for more than 10 years. He was active in the Lewinsville, Vienna, and Ocean Drive Presbyterian Churches, danced with the Old Dominion Cloggers, was president of the James Madison H.S. Band Parents, and coached teams in Vienna Little League and Vienna Youth Soccer.
Mr. Hawkins is survived by his sisters, Laura Snowden (Edward) and Joan Rooney; sons, Glyde Hawkins III (Marjorie), Bruce Hawkins (Kit); daughters, Patricia Dye (Clent), Cynthia McDowell (Kevin), and Donna Long (David); 10 grandchildren (Jessica Angert [Glenn]; Anita, Katrina, and Glyde Hawkins IV [Sarah]; Jackson Hawkins; Katherine and Peter Dye; Nicholas Castellano IV; and Christopher and Matthew Long); and 1 great-granddaughter (Belle Hawkins). He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 61 years, Anita Louise Greene; sister, Charlene Hawkins; and brothers, Thomas Michael, Edison L., and Franklin D. Hawkins.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 16, at Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church.
