Gregory J Humes

Gregory “Greg” John Humes, 55, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2026, following a courageous seven-year battle with cancer. Born on February 17, 1971, in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of John Robert Humes, Jr. and Kathleen Sack Humes.

A 1993 graduate of VA Tech, Greg was initiated as a brother of Alpha Gamma Rho (“AGR”) in the Spring of 1990 and was also a member of “The Marching Virginians”, the Virginia Tech Marching Band, his entire four years at Va Tech where he played the tuba. It was with the band that his love of traveling began as they played throughout stadiums as well as bowl games and parades throughout the southeast.

Following graduation, Greg began his career as an Industrial Electrician. In 1994, while living in Rocky Mount, NC, he met and fell in love with Lisa Rowe. They married on August 12, 1995, and welcomed their son, Michael in 1997. The family moved to Nottoway County, VA in 2001 until returning to North Carolina in 2013 where they resided in Norwood and eventually purchased their “getaway” home in Calabash.

Greg was a long-time member of Memorial Baptist Church in Norwood, North Carolina. His faith was never-wavering and upon his cancer diagnosis, the church became an even stronger rock to lean upon during his journey. The overwhelming love and support of River of Life Baptist Church, in Carolina Shores, NC led him and Lisa to their recent memberships.

In 2019, following his cancer diagnosis, Greg truly began living life to the fullest. His attitude was always positive, and he had a profound impact on many. During covid, Greg was fortunate that his cancer went into remission. He and Lisa bought an RV and began traveling. He wanted to make sure he lived his dreams and left nothing undone. Greg witnessed the love between his son and daughter-in-law as they married and most importantly, he was blessed with the greatest joy of becoming “Pop Pop” to T.J.

He fought the good fight, finished the race, and above all else, Greg kept the faith. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 30 years, Lisa Rowe Humes is his son, Michael Humes (wife, Vicky); grandson, T.J. Humes; mother, Kathleen Humes; father, John Robert Humes, Jr. (Debra); paternal grandmother, Jean Humes; several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Greg is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Harvey and Betty Sack; paternal grandfather, John Robert Humes, Sr.; and uncle, Jeff Humes.

Lola, his faithful four-legged canine companion and caregiver, also survives Greg.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at River of Life Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
