Coach Dunlap aka "Dunnie" was a special man with a warm personality and infectious laugh that reverberated through the halls of N. Myrtle Beach High School and the Surf Club and Beachwood driving ranges. Born on August 13, l944 in Orangeburg, SC to the late Harold E. Dunlap, Sr. and Lucy Sanders Dunlap, he attended A.C. Flora High School in Columbia where he played football, baseball, and ran track. He went on to the University of South Carolina to play baseball for the Gamecocks and received a Bachelor's degree in 1966. He received his master's degree from Appalachian State University in 1967 while serving as a graduate assistant on the baseball team. He began his first teaching assignment and coaching career in 1967 at Garrett High School in Charleston Heights, S.C. and soon became the head football coach. His football teams advanced twice to the state playoffs. In 1971 his team won the AAA lower state championships and in 1972 the team was AAA state champion with a 29-1 record. In 1977, he came to N. Myrtle Beach High School as head football and golf coach. During these years Coach Dunlap was awarded the Sun News All Area Coach of the Year twice, Shrine Bowl All Stars award in 1987, North-South All Stars Head Coach Award in 1989, and inducted to the Athletic Hall of Fame at North Myrtle Beach in 2016. His passion for coaching extended beyond the football field as his relationships with his players was a priority to inspire their lives in positive ways. He is survived by his wife of 32 yrs., Mandy Dunlap, his brother David Dunlap (Teresa), his niece Leslie Dunlap Patel (Ashi), and four cousins, Mary Rotenberry, Sandra Hipp, Pam Dahmer, and Lexi Hope as well as step children Brian and Erica Stenger. Harold's love for life after retirement included all things fishing with his brother, David, watching Gamecock football, hitting golf balls with his golf buddies, spending time with his wife and pets, preparing a prolific tomato garden each year and enjoying the town of West Jefferson, N.C. and surrounding mountains several months in the summer. His special touch with pets and animals was easy to see to the extent that yard squirrels would eat peanuts out of his hand. He was loved by his wife, pets, family and friends. A memorial celebration of life will be held at Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church, 410 6th Ave. S., North Myrtle Beach on Sunday, Nov. 26th at 2:00 pm followed by visitation and barbecue in the Life Center at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach.
