John and his twin sister, Joan, were born on August 13, 1943 to Evelyn (Williams) and Louis Kubricky in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They, along with older sister, Susan, and younger brother, Jimmy, were raised in West Allis, Wisconsin, where John resided until he joined the US Navy in 1960. He was stationed in many places around the country and world, but he settled in Norfolk, Virginia, where he met and married his wife, Barbara (McInnerney) in 1976. John fondly referred to her as his "cougar", even though she is only 4 years his senior, and he would actually introduce her as such to all new acquaintances. They shared 47 years together and their life spanned across three different states. Barbara was the love of his life.
John was, first and foremost, a child of God, extremely devoted to his faith. He read his daily devotionals first thing every morning before most people had even risen for the day. He attended church weekly and could often be found reading scripture in front of the congregation.
John was also a proud Vietnam Veteran and was the President of the Vietnam Veterans in Punta Gorda, Florida, where he worked tirelessly to help other veterans be awarded their benefits, rewards, and respect. He was especially proud of helping the Veterans Without Families get their burial rights and services. And he took great pride in washing the Vietnam Wall in Punta Gorda to honor his fellow fallen veterans. He fiercely loved being an American, wore a bald eagle tattoo on his shoulder, and proudly flew the United States flag in front of his house every day of the year.
John loved his family deeply. He had recently arranged for a week-long family reunion at the beach for his 80th birthday. It brought him so much joy to celebrate with them in such a joyous time and place. Unbeknownst to any of them, including himself, John would be diagnosed with brain cancer the following week and be gone within six weeks. His family will cherish that time even more so now as it was a special gift of lifetime memories made possible only by John.
And lastly, John loved to travel! He had been secretly planning a 50 year Anniversary trip with "his cougar" to go to the Greek Isles and Portugal. He had prepared a letter to family members to prepare to join them and to make it the next family reunion, at which time they would celebrate their Golden Anniversary and again renew their vows.
His family and friends will remember him for being the life of the party, making silly faces, telling great jokes, talking with anyone, helping everyone, sharing kindness, being compassionate, and loving deeply.
John was preceded in death by his mother Evelyn, father Louis, sister Susan, brother Jimmy, and other dear friends and family.
