Lawrence (Larry) C. Bernard of Longs, SC passed away Tuesday February 10 at River Park Memory Care, Little River, SC. He had been battling PPA, a form of dementia for a number of years. He was able to live at home due to the support of friends until moving to River Park in January 2025. The loving care and support he received at River Park from their staff and from Your Health Hospice as he declined was wonderful. Visits from friends and often their dogs brightened his days at River Park.
He was born at Corpus Christi, ,TX, Naval Base to F. Clayton and Eleanor J Bernard. He grew up and attended school in Scotch Plains, NJ. Predeceased by his parents and only sibling, George Bernard, he is survived by his sister-in-law Susan Bernard of Knoxville, TN. He moved to North Myrtle Beach in the mid 1970s and said he found his real home here.
He graduated from Gettysburg College with a degree in history.
He worked for The City of North Myrtle Beach in the Public Works Department from the 1970s until his retirement. Larry was quiet man loved by many. His sense of humor and quick smile remained until the end. He loved joking and it was easy to be fooled by his antics. He was able to use humor to hide his declining health in the later years. His intelligence, easy recall of facts and trivia was evident when talking with him. He was loyal and generous friend helping many without the need for recognition of his contributions. At River Park he found ways to help the other residents and staff even as he was needing help.
He was an avid reader of history, mysteries, and espionage books.
He followed football and other team sports in person and on TV. If you needed a fact, a standing or other info he would know the answer. He enjoyed attending his friends’ children’s sports events to cheer them on. He liked cars, driving his sporty MG in road rallies as a young man. His team won a number of trophies which were displayed in his house.
As a lover of all animals, his concern for animal welfare was evident in the multiple charities he supported. He usually cultivated a vegetable garden, maintained lush flower and landscape plantings and fed both the birds and the squirrels.
Traveling to the British Isles, Canadian Maritimes and Costa Rica with brother George and his wife were highlights in some of the later years.
He was inseparable from Boyce his large and gentle companion dog who died in 2023. The essential beginning of each day was a several mile walk with their friends at North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex. The picture included here was taken during one such walk.
His positive energy created a legacy that continues through those whose lives he touched
