

Mason H. Anderson, a beloved figure in the community of Calabash, North Carolina, was born on February 7, 1935, on a small farm at Hickman’s Crossroads. The oldest surviving son of Dewey and Pearl Anderson, Mason passed away peacefully, joining his cherished wife, Ann Anderson, who predeceased him on July 19, 2018. He is also reunited with his two older sisters, Evolulu McLamb and Marion Anderson.
Mason is survived by his younger brother, Howard Anderson, and his wife, Sonya, as well as his only daughter, Deborah Anderson (D.L) and her partner Gary Reaves; granddaughter, Rhiannon Ilumin and her husband Justin along with a great grandson, Mason. He was a proud grandfather to Rhiannon Ilumin, who brought him immense joy, and a loving great-grandfather to her son, Mason. He will be deeply missed by his favorite niece, Paula Smith, and nephews Mark and Kevin Anderson, Keith Smith, and niece Nancy Smith, alongside a multitude of friends and community members whose lives he touched with his wisdom and generosity.
A proud graduate of Shallotte High School in 1953, Mason attended Clemson University, earning his degree in 1957. He built a successful career as a salesman for Ralston Purina before pursuing his passion for law at UNC-Chapel Hill, where he graduated with honors at the top of his class. Mason became the first attorney to open a law office in Shallotte, leaving an indelible mark on the community.
His contributions to Brunswick County were profound and far-reaching. As a prolific housing developer, Mason was instrumental in creating numerous residential communities that provided homes for countless families. He played a pivotal role in relocating the Brunswick County Complex and was vital in the establishment of Brunswick County Hospital. As one of the founding members of the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce and serving as school board attorney for many years, he was crucial in the construction of West Brunswick High School, among other significant projects. Mason was also a proud member of the Rotary Club and dedicated himself to the positive development of his community.
Mason’s faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he found deep fulfillment in his church, Bethel Primitive Baptist Church. His devotion to God, his family, his community, and his country was unwavering.
Mason H. Anderson leaves behind a legacy of kindness, integrity, and commitment that will be felt for generations to come. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his spirit continue to inspire and guide us all.
A visitation for Mason will be held Saturday, October 19, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the residence, 380 S. Middleton Dr NW, Calabash, North Carolina 28467. A celebration of life at Brunswick Plantation golf course clubhouse will follow immediately after the visitation from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. A funeral service will occur Sunday, October 20, 2024, at 3:00 PM at Bethel Primitive Baptist, 1010 Hickman Rd NW, Calabash, NC 28467. A burial will occur Sunday, October 20, 2024, at the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Bethel Primitive Baptist Church or the American Red Cross for the relief fund for Western North Carolina.
