Bob was born in Englewood, NJ and moved with his family to Madison, NY while in elementary school. Bob received an electrical engineering Bachelor’s degree from Clarkson University and his Master’s from Syracuse University. He was a proud veteran of the armed services, having served in the US Army. Bob joined IBM in Endicott, NY as a computer programmer in 1964 and enjoyed a successful and innovative career for over 30 years. Following his time with IBM, Bob became a substitute teacher in NY and then a math tutor for local high school students when he moved to Calabash, NC in 2005.
It was during high school that Bob met his future wife, Jackie. They married in 1961 and had a storybook bond for their entire marriage. He was devoted to his family and engaged in his children and grandchildren’s diverse interests. Along with his unwavering support, Bob’s sense of humor and ability to have fun, including a good prank, provided for a lifetime of wonderful experiences and memories for his family.
Bob was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church and a member of Right to Life and the American Legion. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Bogey Boys Golf Club. Bob was a friend to everyone and a very generous man, both with his time and financial support of charitable causes.
He is survived by his inseparable and loving wife of 60 years, Jackie Carney Rangel; his cherished children, Terri Mitchell (Ron); Bob Rangel (Maureen); Judy Rangel (Rick); LeighAnn Sotomayor (Joe); his beloved grandchildren, Amber, Kevin, Rob, Anna, Shannon, Christopher, Macy; and his two great-grandchildren, Daphne and Carmen. Bob was the son of the late Eugene and Mildred Terhune Rangel, and was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Clark.
The family would like to thank the compassionate professionals at Lower Cape Fear Life Care for their hospice support.
