Spent years with him...Quiet, smiling, unassuming greatness!
Surely he is with the Lord...and " his joy no one will take from him."

Victor, or Willy, as I knew him was a great man. He assisted me in forming values that have stayed with me a lifetime. Most valuable of his lessons was hearing what another person had to say and addressing it.  Thank you Willy. 

I entered St Gabriel's in September 1961.  Brother William Martin was my superior.  We formed an instant bond.  He was the kindest and gentlest man I ever knew.  His influence on my life remains today.  He was a teacher and a mentor as well as a dear friend.  He took me under his wing .   These were the 2 best years of my life.  We last saw each other August 28, 1963 when my fellow class mates received their habits and were welcomed as novices.  Sadly God did not grant me the grace to become a brother.    I will always be grateful for his guidance and his love.  Requiescant in pace.



My sincere condolence on the passing of Victor Martin.  It has been 65 years since I first met Victor when I was a novice at South Kortright, NY.  I still remember him as one who cared for all with whom he worked.  May he Rest In Peace.

Vic was a wonderful, caring man who wanted the very best for his students.  I was so pleased to have him as a superior and teacher at Saint Gabriel's Juniorate.

May Victor rest in peace.  Amen.

Vic was as extraordinary, graceful and kind a man as one will ever know.  He was all this and more as a beloved uncle.  We didn't know him in his years of service, but he often spoke warmly of it and of his his dear friends there.  Requiesce in pace.


It was my honor and privilege to serve with "Willee" Martin (as he was known in the religious life) We were in charge 80-100 young men who wanted to serve the Lord. We had to teach them scholastically, and religiously as members of a teaching order of Brothers. In addition certain elderly religious men lived in the spacious grounds of St. Gabriel's College where acres of field and 7 buildings had to be maintained . Here is where Vic Martin thrived.  He took to heart the Lord's command  to lead by serving. Not only did he teach, but he worked, laughed and played competitively with the 20 to 22 year old  young men. He was especially kind to the old timers who needed understanding and care. I understand that this care  accompanied him in the short time that he lived in the Myrtle Beach home . There is no doubt in my mind that he now hears the master's words, "Well done, good and faithful servant.  Enter into the joy of the Lord." 

Victor William Martin, you were a truly humane spiritual guide and brother to many of us young men at Lakewood, N.J. during the sixties, and were known to carry that same spirit throughout your long and wonderful life.  'I heard a voice from heaven say, 'Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord' ... 'Yes,' said the Spirit, so that they may rest from their labours, for their good deeds follow with them.' (Revelation 14:13). Rest now, Victor Martin, in eternal peace.

Blessings for all those who enjoyed the company of this esteemed gentle man who enriched all those he encountered.  I was part of the group of 62 in Lakewood.  Vic personified kindness especially when I suffered an illness requiring frequent trips to the doctor.  Sincere sympathy on his passing to all the family.

Victor William Martin was my "Superior" in the summer 1962 in Lakewood, NJ prior to our group of 50 receiving the Habit of the Irish Christian Brothers. He was a saintly man. I last saw him at one of our group reunions several years back. We all will miss Victor. Rest in Peace, Victor William Martin.

My condolences on the passing of a special  person for whom  I have      the greatest respect.   As the director of our community in Lakewood N.J. many years ago, I found Victor to be a very compassionate and caring person who has always had a place in my memory and heart over many years.  May he rest in eternal peace.

I first knew Victor Martin 58 years ago, he in a college faculty role and I as a student.  Along with knowledge, he shared his lived principles. Although he had a heavy workload, he knew each individual as a particular name and a particular person. 

It was great to see Vic at a reunion 28 years ago, where he still remembered each of us. We've kept in touch since then, usually by mail. His mind was as fine-tuned as ever when he phoned me in British Columbia early this year, seemingly in good health. I'm sad that Vic is gone already, but his life was full of happiness imparted and mutually shared.

It was a privilege to have know such a fine man, even from a distance.  I've always felt a fondness whenever I heard his name.  He was a brother to many. 

Willy Martin was my first Superior when I arrived in the Juniorate in 1961.  He was like a second father.  When I returned to Lakewood 1965 for Scholasticate he was again my Superior and again my second father.  RIP
