Rest in Heavenly Peace my dear co-worker!

I just received this news today through an old coworker. Don was my supervisor and a mentor in the Page Makeup Department at Newsweek, in his previous career. Our work relationship began circa 1980, at least. I could not have asked for a fairer or more judicious manager, who was all about the job but also had a wonderful sense of humor and a mischievous side. I separated from Newsweek in 1988, and we lost touch over the ensuing years. We survived numerous late-night, late-breaking news closes of the magazine, and I am only sorry that Don didn't survive this. To his family and friends I knew in those times, I offer my sincere condolences and sympathies. Don was a terrific guy.

Don occupies a special place in my memory, and in my heart.
We got together through a common interest in pickleball. I had just (formally) retired in 2006. I'm a Union resident and I bumped into this sport at the Union Y. Don showed up virtually every time, it seems, pickleball was on the schedule. He was always willing to help. I supposed he reminded me of myself.
To me, Don was sincere, dependable, caring, respectful, helpful, willing, encouraging, and never never pushy.  Did I mention quiet?
Frequently, we at the Union Y would congregate at a local coffee/bagel establishment, Bagels & Beans. I'm sitting there with my small coffee and bagel (which I'm scraping off 75% of the cream cheese) and Don was making love to a thick egg, ham & cheese bagel sandwich. I'm paraphrasing  here, I'm not really sure what was in the sandwich.
I will miss him.
If there is such a thing as a hereafter, I'm sure he hard at work making those who crossed  over after him feel welcome.

I remember the good times we had playing pickleball with Don at the Union YMCA. I still wear the MG cap he gave me years ago.

Don, we will sorely miss your presence in the WDVR studios every Friday afternoon.  It was a pleasure and honor to get to know you over the past several years.
