Dear Debbie,Samantha and Matthew,

I was shocked to know of Dr. Lara's passing when I came across this obituary page during my search for someone's phone number at St.Barnabas! 

I was one of his residents in pathology back in the early 90's when he was the program director. He is undoubtedly one of the smartest pathologists I have ever come across. I will always remember him for his love and passion for teaching. Signing out cases with Dr. Lara was a great learning experience for us. I remember meeting the three of you when you occasionally visited him at the hospital. He always spoke about his family with love and pride! 

My deepest condolences to all of you! Dr. Lara will forever remain in the hearts of all the residents he touched with his brilliant teaching and guidance! May his soul rest in peace!

Debbie, Samantha and Matthew... We have never met, but Jon was one of my best friends all thru medical school at FEU in Manila. We lost touch during our residencies (both of us in Pathology!), and then thru our careers, which can happen even to good friends. Fortunately I was in North NJ about 2 years ago for business, called Jon at the hospital, drove over and reunited with him for the afternoon after 20+ years! I just found out this evening that Jon had passed away and was shocked... I am so very sorry to hear this, and my deepest sympathies are with you, as well as his brother and sister whom I knew in Manila. I will always remember Jon as the young medical student with a great sense of humor, and a best friend who was my companion as we would get into all types of mischief together in medical school!

I know you are in Paradise with our Lord, my dear kabatch Jon. I was so terribly saddened of hearing of the news of Dr. Lara's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and children whom I know he cared for more than anything in this word. May he rest in peace. I was fortunate enough to meet Dr. Lara in 2006 at which time he gave me a great opportunity to join his residency program. During the next 4 years he taught me pathology and how to practice it as a professional and with compassion for my patients. Jon had a strong personality like myself so I immediately developed a good relationship with him and probably worked with him the most in comparison to some of my peers because the more shy or timid would make deals with me asking that I spend the long day in his office signing out cases with him, maybe because they perceived him as too demanding or were intimidated by him raising his voice if we made a mistake or didn't know something that we should have known, anyway I had no problems with doing this and found it to be a wonderful privilege and in no way a punishment. You have to have a thick skin in this profession and not take criticism personally from someone like Jon who obviously knew more than us, had a lot of knowledge he was willing to share, and only wanted to help us strive to develop and grow into more than just competent, but exceptional pathologists under his watch. The combination of the invaluable teachings obtained from my fellowship director and from the countless hours spent at the microscope with Dr. Lara definitely made the majority contribution in molding me into the pathologist that I am today and for that I am eternally grateful. I will miss him dearly as both a mentor and friend, and will keep his knowledge and all fond memories of time spent with him with me forever.

In May 1985 or thereabouts but merely a few months after setting foot in America, Jon was one of the first to visit us in Edison, NJ.  As new immigrants, there is no greater comfort to see a relative, one who can not only just show us the ropes but share our lives here as well.  It was certainly comforting to my dad (Uncle Ramon) who had worries on what life was going to be like stateside.  We will never forget this.  But then again, reading the notes here, no surprise he was there early on.  Jon was that type of guy - caring, compassionate, and always comforting.
