Born and reared in West Orange, Mr. O’Connell was a 1965 graduate of West Orange High School. He was employed by the Sheltered Workshop in Orange until he left for health reasons. He had been a resident of Pine Acres Nursing Home in Madison since 2005. An only child, Mr. O’Connell was predeceased by his parents, Veronica and Matthew, Sr. He was the inspiration for a character in the mystery novel, The Unbound Wind, written by his cousin, John Dandola.
