

He is survived by his partner of 25 years, Gayle Englert; his three children, Sara Klein (Matthieu), Matthew Leighton (Alison), and Daniel Leighton; his five grandchildren, Hannah, Noah, and Leah Klein, and Paul and Everett Leighton, who knew him affectionately as Pappou. He also leaves behind his sister Audrey Cole (Ricky) as well as nephew Adam Cole (Nicole) and niece Barrie Perna (Michael).
Michael was born on January 27,1955 to the late Carol (nee Levin) Leighton and Norman Leighton. He grew up in Millburn, NJ and later attended The George Washington University and Georgetown University School of Law. Throughout his 40-year career as an attorney, he focused his practice on real estate transactions, serving thousands of clients with precision and distinction.
Later in life, he found his greatest joy rolling on the floor with his grandkids, who delighted in his warmth and playfulness. He was exceptionally smart and well-known for a great sense of humor that could cut straight to the truth and leave everyone laughing. He will be deeply missed and remembered with love, laughter, and gratitude.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, September 29, 2025, at Villa Amalfi (793 Palisade Avenue, Cliffside Park, NJ) from 4 to 7 PM. Memories will be shared beginning at 5 PM.
