Paul Francis McDonough, age 91 of Livingston, N.J., passed away surrounded by his loving wife and family on July 11, 2019.
Born on August 22, 1927 in Scranton, PA, he was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (nee O’Grady) McDonough. Paul was the ever-loving husband of sixty-seven years to Anna Mae (nee Sadosky) McDonough; loving father of Diane Zambito and her husband Salvatore of Livingston, N.J., Paul D. McDonough and his wife Kerri of Livingston, N.J., and Gary McDonough and his wife Mary Jane of Stamford, CT; cherished ‘Pop’ of six granddaughters, Samantha (nee Zambito) Wohl and her husband, Jared Wohl, Devan Zambito and her fiancé, Billy Chiusano, Drew McDonough, Erin McDonough, Shannon McDonough and Teagan McDonough, and one great-grandson, Quinn Francis Wohl, his namesake; and loved brother of two sisters, Ann Marie Dean and Joan Ruddy of Scranton, PA, who predeceased him. He derived much joy from spending time with, and seeing the accomplishments of, his children and grandchildren. He had a light-heartedness that was contagious and a warmth that made everyone feel like they had known him forever. He left a lasting impression on all those he met, and will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all.
Paul was a graduate of Holy Rosary High School in Scranton and served in the U.S. Navy for three years.
Paul moved to N.J. with Anna Mae in 1953. He held a thirty-four-year tenure with the United States Postal Service ultimately retiring as the District Director of Employee and Labor Relations, a position in which he derived great satisfaction and success. During his time with the USPS, he also held office as President of the Livingston Clerks Union, President of the Essex County Postal Supervisors, and Secretary of the National Association of Postal Supervisors State Executive Board.
In his younger years he loved to bowl, vacation on cruises, and travel to Gulf Port, Mississippi for the winter months with his wife and late brother-in-law, Raymond (“Uncle Ray”) Sadowski. For many years, he hosted holidays with Anna Mae at the home they built in 1956 in Livingston, N.J. – making his famous mashed potatoes and turnips – and his family enjoyed spending summers at their pool, where he was always adorned with a big straw hat and oversized sunglasses. He was an avid reader and New York Mets fan and enjoyed playing golf, going to lunch on Wednesdays with his friends and taking bus trips to Atlantic City with his wife. He also always appreciated a good nap.
He was dedicated to his Catholic faith and a member of St. Philomena, Livingston , N.J., for over fifty years, serving as a Eucharistic Minister for more than four decades. He spent time volunteering at St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark, N.J. and served as Co-Chairman and Delegate for the Newark Dioceses from 1995 to 1996. He also served as a member and Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Livingston, N.J., and regularly attended – and took minutes at – Livingston Old Guard meetings. He served as President of the Big L Club in Livingston, N.J. from 1975 to 1977.
His family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff at Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, N.J. – with a special thanks to Dr. Ramsey Asmar – who all went above and beyond in providing Paul with the most wonderful care, helping him feel ongoing dignity and support throughout the process.
Friends may visit with the family on Monday, July 15th from 4 pm to 8 pm at Quinn Funeral Home in Livingston, N.J.
A Funeral Mass will be offered on Tuesday, July 16th at St. Philomena Church in Livingston, N.J. at 10:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or online at www.stjude.org/donate would be greatly appreciated.
