Richard grew up in Glen Ridge, NJ, and most recently resided in New York City. He was an employee of Valiant Technologies and formerly volunteered as an EMT in Montclair, NJ, rising to the rank of volunteer lieutenant, as well as a Big Brother in New York City.
Richard competed in multiple Tough Mudder races and loved to swing dance. He was beloved by all he encountered.
Richard leaves behind his mother Irene Hsu, father Matthew Chang, brother Edward Chang, sister Emily C. Brands, brother-in-law Hal Brands, and nephew and niece Henry and Annabelle Brands.
A vigil will be held at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave., Livingston, NJ 07039 on Friday, December 19th from 4pm to 9pm. Funeral mass will be held at St. Raphael Church, 346 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave., Livingston, NJ 07039 on Saturday, December 20th at 10am. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in his memory to the Big Brothers & Big Sisters of New York.
