Richard Ernst Huber Sr. passed away Sunday, September 30, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was 87 years old. He was born in Elizabeth, NJ on May 21, 1931 and was raised in the Vailsburg section of Newark by his parents Frank Ernst Huber and Jean Van Savage Huber. Richard graduated from the Newark College of Engineering with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. He then proudly served as a member of the United States Air Force and later the Air Force Reserve. During his service in Los Angeles, he met his future wife Jacqueline Hermann, originally of Cincinnati. The couple returned to New Jersey and were married in Vailsburg. Richard received his master’s degree in chemical engineering, also from Newark College of Engineering. He and his wife Jacqueline started a family that would eventually include five children and five grandchildren.
Richard was able to use his education, his natural abilities as a salesman and an entrepreneurial spirit in a series of business ventures that provided a comfortable home life for his growing family. Besides his hobbies as a coin and stamp collector, his passion was the Boys Scouts. As a young man, he received both his Eagle Scout award and Quartermaster award, the highest honor of Sea Scouts. He served as a Scout leader during his time in the Air Force. Richard was an active member of Troop 12 in Livingston NJ where he served as Scoutmaster and saw all three of his sons become Eagle Scouts. He continued to be active in the troop well after his sons achieved their ranks. Richard was extremely proud of that scouting tradition he held so dear was being upheld by his grandsons. His daughter, Erika, became an All-American diver and Richard was honored to be part of her development as a nationally ranked diver.
Richard was predeceased by his son, Eric. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jacqueline, his children Richard, Jr., Kurt, Erika and Wade, and his grandchildren Karl, Aidan, Sarah, Joseph and Ryan.
