Please join the family as they honor Richard’s life with a visitation at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave, Livingston, NJ on Sunday, October 15 from 2-6pm. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary Armenian Church, 200 W. Mt. Pleasant Ave, Livingston, NJ on Monday, October 16 at 10:30am, followed by interment at Restland Memorial Park, 77 DeForest Ave., East Hanover, NJ.
Richard was born in Newark, NJ on January 6, 1930, the son of Abkar and Mary Marashlian, and brother of Margaret, Robert, and Chris. After spending his early childhood in Newark, the family moved to Jerusalem from 1938-1945, until their return to New Jersey following WWII. He graduated Upsala College in 1951 as Captain of the wrestling team and President of Phi Alpha Theta national history society, honorably served in the Army Reserve Corps and Air National Guard, and attended law school before ultimately earning an MBA from Rutgers University in 1957.
In 1958 he formed his own business as a licensed Real Estate Broker in Bloomfield. He later transitioned into the specialty of real estate appraising and consultation. He became a designated RM and MAI member of the original American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers, and designated SRA and SRPA member of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers, which later merged into the Appraisal Institute. He was also a Certified Tax Assessor.
Richard was never afraid to take on a complex case, and relished testifying in court as an expert witness in realty litigation matters. It brought out his competitive spirit. As a professional, he took pride in dressing for success. Going to work every day, cleanshaven, in jacket and tie was one of his trademarks.
Richard impacted many colleagues’ lives personally and professionally as a teacher and mentor. His greatest joy came from teaching appraisal courses locally and across the country. He was an Adjunct Professor at Rutgers University Newark, and certified instructor for the Appraisal Institute. He was also an instructor for the New Jersey Association of Realtors Graduate Institute, and served as President of the Board of Realtors of Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Nutley, and Belleville. He loved sharing his knowledge and passion for all-things real estate.
Richard was very active in the Armenian community, serving as a longtime member of several organizations including ACYOA, AGBU, YPA, and a term as President of the Knights of Vartan.
Interests of Richard included history, politics, and foreign languages. He also enjoyed studying the stock market with great intent. Richard had a natural ability to tell jokes like a standup comedian, bringing laughter to countless people. He lived most of his life in
Verona while raising his family, before moving to Cedar Knolls. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Nevart (Chorbajian) Marashlian; sons
Richard, Paul, Edward and his wife Tracey, and their children Charles and Andrew, his cherished grandchildren; sister Margaret and brother Chris; and extended family whom he loved dearly.
In lieu of flowers, kindly send donations to St. Mary Armenian Church in Richard’s name.
